Subject: Single Axis/Natural Golf

I am interested in hearing from single axis golfers who use David's 1Iron clubs. I have had good success combining the two concepts. I am interested in hearing about what grips you find to be the best, what ball position you use, whether you are using the latest version of 1Irons and if you have made any specific adjustments in the theories to make the concepts work together. I am also interested in knowing how the new driver is working with the single axis swing. Thanks and Happy 4TH of July!

Jerry,
I use a single axis swing and the 1 irons. So far I am very satisfied. My accuracy has improved a great deal while my distance has remained about the same. Sad to say I was never a long ball hitter. What is very nice however is that my scores are going down consistently. I am a firm believer now that hitting the ball a mile is not a prerequisite to good scores( although I still try sometimes). I have questioned David Lake on using the single axis swing as well and he maintains that the clubs are not swing specific and I believe thats true. Any shortcomings in my play are due to problems with the swing not the clubs. I know Todd Graves was interested in these clubs too. Although he doesn't endorse them, he does believe they can be hit effectively in single axis. All in all, I think 1 iron and single axis is a good pairing. I really like the driver and the fairway woods are dynamite.

Thanks Ed. Do you use tapered grips or the non tapered grips? Do you play the ball from center stance as David recommends or do you place it differently for different clubs? Keep hitting it in the short grass! Jerry

Jerry,
I did replace the original grips with golf pride mid size tour wrap. I had them built up with two extra wraps on the lead hand and three wraps on the trail hand. This was per the reccomendation of Tim Graves. As to ball position, I generally play most everything middle of stance. I have to fight a tendency to play most of the irons slightly back in the stance. It seems however that it is better to be slightly back than forward. Pitching is one area that I still am not comfortable with middle of stance but its coming. How about you? What seems to work and what doesn't?
I am certainly not thinking of changing from single axis or from the 1 irons. Take care. Ed

Ed, thanks for the info. I use a center of stance ball placement for all the irons. For the driver and woods, I move the ball forward a couple of inches. I have the CER version of 1Irons and my driver is a 10.5 loft. I find I need to have it a little forward to achieve a good trajectory. I also use the mid size grips on my clubs, but I have not added the wraps. Stay in the short grass, Jerry

I have been using a set of 3w,5, 7w and 5 to 9 irons for a month now (latest club design) with the stock grips. Generaly I like midsize grips but will not change this year as I am having good success and still getting better. Awsome at the driving range but having to get on the course more to gain confidence and performance there. Using the center ball position and this is working better and better for me as I gain confidence in it (except driver). Get really good control with the woods from the center ball position and have driven the green (and held on)on a number of par 3s with 5 and 7 woods which is what I wanted to do when I bought these clubs. Just buildt a component driver that is awsome and it is as good as OEMs (better than most)that I tried at some demo days but at considerably less cost.

I am a single axis club swinger. My golfing buddies shake their heads at my swing but can't argue with long and straight. Especialy 250-280 yd drives down the fairway.

My motivation on 1 Iron Clubs was to gain better control and I am definitely improving in this department while still working on getting more yardage on the irons.

Golf ---- a lovely walk in the park.

Cliff

I have been a Moe Norman follower for 2 years, work with Graves brothers, and switched to the 1Irons 3-LW and 3, 5 woods last November, and new driver when it came out shortly after. I am incredibly happy with irons. I have Winn midsize grips with no build up. I play the ball where I played my former 8 iron which is same length as my 1Iorns - just ahead of middle of my stance with 3-LW.

I lost distance (1 full club) for first 30 plus days, but gained much more accuracy. At 6' 5" was very happy to not only gain accuracy with long irons, but also with wedges which the same length really helped with. At about 90 days into process, I was hitting same distance to plus 5 yards per iron as I worked on swinging every club identically, and especially not over swinging.

I hit the 3 wood about 240 vs 250 for previous club, and 5 wood about 210 vs former club at 225 and have not gained that back - accuracy about the same so I have been switching back and forth.

With the driver I have been hitting it about 255-260 vs 280-290 with previous club, but with much more accuracy. I have been experimenting with square driver at 2 inch longer length, but not happy with accuracy - time will tell. Probably switch back to 1Iron driver as accuracy/consistency is king!

Overall my handicap (and I post everything with no freebies) has dropped from 13.9 to a 9.6, and I believe I will be at 8 to 9 by end of summer.

After taking lessons from Todd Graves and continuing to work on my Moe Normon swing, I am 100% behind my 1Iron irons - I am still in search of a little more distance with my woods and driver, but will probably sacrifice in the end for accuracy - which has produced lower scores. I just played a full 18 holes with only 3-LW and putter (no woods) today on 6200 yard men's tees and played great (for me) shot 80 with many opportunities to score better. Accuracy is where it is at!

Hope this opinion and experience helps!

Jonathan

Thanks for the info. Sounds like several members have had success combining the single axis approach with 1Irons. I am considering trying the non tapered grips on my 1Irons. Has anyone used this type of grip? How has it worked for you? Thanks, Jerry
