Jim,

Shaft length within the parameters of conventional golf club design has absolutely no affect on distance. Fairway woods have a longer club length than irons for the simple reason that woods are designed to sweep the ball from the turf whereas irons are designed to pinch the ball using a steeper swing plane (hitting down on the ball). The former requires a flatter swing plane and, hence, a longer club length.

Fairway woods are also designed with a much lower center of gravity than an iron and are typically much easier to hit and get the ball airborne than a low lofted iron. A low lofted iron requires a certain amount of swing speed to be played effectively and is why we recommend that golfers with a slower swing speed substitute a #5 and #7 wood for the #3 and #4 irons within a set.

You can click the following link for more information on club length versus distance: http://www.1irongolf.com/index_files/page0004.htm#Will_a_longer_iron_hit_the_ball_farther_than_a_shorter_one_
