There are two things that will correct this problem immediately:

1) Move closer to the ball.
2) Pause at the top of your backswing.

1 Irons are designed to force you into the ideal swing posture and swing plane. Since this is a more upright posture than you are probably used to it requires you to move closer to the ball and stand more erect (in other words you should never be reaching for the ball).

All of the best golfers have one thing in common and that is a momentary pause (sometimes almost imperceptible but it is there) at the top of their backswing. This slight pause in the transition from backswing to downswing produces a huge increase in clubhead control and resultant ball striking.

Make sure that you practice these two things at the range since it is impossible to make a swing change on the course.

I appreciate the tips. Went to the range today and hit 100 balls. Did a couple of things:

1 -- moved a bit closer to the ball
2 -- moved the ball a bit forward in my stance
3 -- concentrated on the transition from backswing to downswing

By the time I finished, I was consistently striking the ball on the sweetspot. Moving the ball a bit forward of center was more comfortable for me and allowed me to setup with the clubs aligned properly (straight line from belly button to behind the ball).

I'm looking forward to playing tomorrow.
