David M., I am going to guess that your physical activity was pretty limited while waiting for your hip replacement. I would suggest that you talk to a personal trainer-if you have not already- and see if he/she can't recover some of that distance for you through some stretching, pilates, etc type work outs.

Another thought is to look into Lever Power Golf. Its an alternative swing method that uses forearm rotation and bending of the left arm to generate power and takes the wrists out of the swing.

I don't own 1 irons yet so I can't comment on the benefit of the clubs but i will say the majority of the posts about I see around the net are positive so it can't hurt to try em.

David, sorry to hear about your frustration--I too fight arthritis but it definitely sounds like you have a tougher row to hoe.

For years now I've been taking a supplement that combines glucosamin and chondroitin, substances that the body needs to properly produce healthy lubicrated joints. The theory is that as you get older the body produces less of those substances, but if it gets them it can still do its work. This actually started out as a vetrinary treatment for horses and dogs. I'm convinced I couldn't be playing golf (or typing comfortably) without it. You can find it in drugstores these days; sometimes they sell them separately but usually combined. It's not a miracle cure and it took three or four weeks before I began to notice an improvement, but it definitely helps me.

Good luck.
