Subject: several questions

Mr Lake, I can honestly say I have never had a full set of clubs that felt like they were a good fit and I am on my 5th set of clubs (I have been playing around 10 years). I am 6'8" tall with a WTF of 40.5 inches. I have always felt like I had to bend over at the waist way too much (except perhaps on a 2 or 3 iron) to properly ground the club at setup and make a comfortable swing. I have been to 4 supposed professionals to be fitted and everyone of them has come up with slightly different recommendations. My current set is plus 1.5 inches with a standard lie on all my irons. I just recently went to a Callaway demo day to get fitted and they said my clubs needed to be plus 2 inches and bent 3 degrees upright. That is probably true as my divots tend to be a little deeper at the toe of the club but it just seems to me that I will still have the same problem of having to bend over too much on my short irons. It seems like for a tall person like myself all fitters want to base your entire fitting on the maximum length they can build a club (the 3 iron) that hardly anyone even uses anymore just so they can maintain the half inch gap in length between clubs. Will the 1iron method of fitting help me with my hunched over golf?

Also how do you determine what flex shaft a person gets when ordering a set of clubs. I have a swing speed in the high 90's on my driver and used to use a Taylormade 580 with a stiff flex shaft. After being told by the local "experts" that any speed lower than 100 should use a regular flex shaft I switched to a Ping G2 with a regular flex and promptly lost 25 yards on the average drive. Needless to say I have about had it with the conventional wisdom. I have no illusions about ever being able to hammer 300 yard drives or being a scratch golfer (I am a 15 handicap), I only want my clubs to allow me to be more consistent in my ball striking and I can take it from there.

Can you help me?

I realized after posting that I took my WTF measurement incorrectly, (in my bare feet) so it is wrong. After doing it with shoes on it should be 41 inches, not 40.5 inches.

Brooks, in all seriousness, talk directly with David for 10-15 minutes and you'll know what to do next. Good luck!

Brooks,

We have built many sets of golf clubs for current and past NBA players (some of whom have posted their results in the archives of this forum). Through word of mouth alone the number of our NBA customers increases every year. The reason is simply that our fitting model includes golfers of this height while other club makers do not have a clue where to begin.

First of all, there are absolutely no standards in the golf industry as to lie angles, loft angles, club lengths, club weight, etc. Therefore, when you here someone mention plus or minus from standard you know right off the bat that they do not know what they are talking about.

You certainly have never played a set of clubs that came close to fitting you properly in your entire life. Quite frankly, you should not have an iron in your bag that is shorter than a conventional "off the rack" #3 iron club length. It is quite impossible for someone with your W-T-F measurement to hit any iron shorter than this without an exaggerated, bent over posture that puts undue strain on your back. It is interesting to note that the first comment we always receive from our NBA customers is how great their backs feel after a round of golf.

As far as shaft flex, you will want to click on the following link and then read the section detailing our proprietary Shaft Optimization Process: http://www.1irongolf.com/index_files/page0004.htm

David Lake
