Subject: golf clubs for women

I have a set of 1 iron clubs and just love them. I wouldn't want any other clubs. This is my problem. My wife is getting ready to purchase some new clubs and she is going to places like golfsmith and golf galexy. (stuff off the shelf). DAVID Little help Please!

She has hit my 3 iron and I thought she hit it really well, BUT she says the club felt tooooo heavy for her. She is one inch shorter than me and has two bad shoulders. She said, she didn't want to buy the 1 iron clubs unless they were lighter.

Now what!

Lyman,

The reason that your wife feels that your irons are too heavy is because they are longer than what her irons would be. To give you an example of what I am talking about: a putter does not feel heavy because you are holding it vertically; if you held it horizontally it would feel much heavier. When your wife is swinging your irons she is holding them in a more horizontal position than she would with irons that were shorter (fit her properly).

There is another point that I should mention and that is that a golfer will inherently use more of an arm swing with a lighter club which results in a much lessened degree of control. On the other hand, a golfer will inherently use more of a proper torso swing with a heavier club which not only results in more control but greater distance.

1 Irons are not gender or age specific because there is no valid reason for ladies or seniors golf clubs to be built to different specifications. Indeed, any change to our specifications would result in lessened playability. All of the large golf equipment companies do offer ladies and seniors clubs in a lighter version which does not make any sense since a golf club is not heavy in the first place, and in fact, results in a reduction in control and distance. Also, the typical sets of ladies clubs on the market are shorter in length which has absolutely no merit at all since every golfer should be individually fitted for a set of golf clubs based upon their wrist-to-floor measurement to determine proper club length. Typically you will see weaker loft angles in standard ladies and seniors golf clubs for the sole purpose of misleading the customer into thinking that they are hitting their longer irons better. For instance, a typical ladies or seniors #5 iron might have the same loft angle as a standard #6 iron (effectively changing the engraved #6 designation on the club-head to a #5). The fact is that all of us achieve different yardages based solely upon our individual strength and is the reason for different tee boxes on a golf course. Simply renumbering the golf clubs does not change that fact. Our 1 Irons are played by women and seniors all over the world – women and seniors who want to play better golf.

Lyman: My daughter is quite petite and has a set of older 1-Irons. At first she thought they were "too heavy" for her, but when she learned the proper torso/relaxed arm swing, she was actually swinging easier and hitting the ball farther! Take an accurate WTF measurment and you will probably find that your wife's WTF is shorter than yours so the clubs will swing easier for her per David's message above. Have a great New Year! R2
