Subject: Putter Shaft Lengths

David,

Now that I received my new driver and 3 wood this week, my entire bag top to bottom is composed of 1 Iron clubs with the exception of my putter. This is significant as I have always had many different manufactures represented in my bag. I may never need to purchase another wood or iron again unless my wedges wear out. I love my 1 Irons.

Do you have any thoughts about shaft lengths on putters? Is there a "perfect putting posture" that could be created with a shaft length that could be determined by doing a W-T-F measurement as you have instructed us to do for our irons and woods?

In addition to shaft length (if you do have an opinion on this), what other thoughts do you have on putters that you would be willing to share?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Sincerely,

Michael

Michael,

Putting is an endeavor unto itself (a game within a game so to speak) and unique in swing and methodology to any other part of the game. Therefore, basic golf fundamentals do not apply and the field is wide open for individualistic interpretation. Many putting methods and types of putters exist which all produce good results depending on the preference of the individual golfer. Therefore, I would suggest that you try a number of the putters available in your local pro-shop to find one that you feel comfortable with and performs to your satisfaction.

Personally, I prefer wrist putting which is described in one of our previous newsletter and you can view by clicking on the following link: http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs015/1101452092206/archive/1102940611184.html

David,

I'm putting indoors working to learn your stroke.

If I anchor my right wrist I find my ball position is the middle of my. So if I adopt this putting style I will be using a middle of stance ball position for all shots driver through putter. Interesting.

I assume you anchor your right wrist (on your right leg) rather than the left wrist (which would anchor on the left leg) so that motion of the breaking left wrist is unrestricted. I've experimented both ways and I have found anchoring on my right leg to be much better.

Michael,

I actually anchor my right forearm against my right hip with my hands directly in the center of my stance.

Thanks again David. I will give this a try. Spring can't come soon enough.

Michael: Just thought I'd pass this along to you. I've used a standard type 35" "side putter" for some time now, but just recently changed over to one of the new 50", "face-on or side-saddle" putters. It worked wonders for my putting! As Mr. Lake says, putting is a whole different game and there are many ways to putt. I really like the simplicity of just facing the target and tapping the ball in - it really does work and alignmemt problems vanish because your arm is just swinging in it's natural back-and-forth path. Check around and look at all the various putting methods out there. Then try a few and see what you think. Good luck and have a great day. R2

Thanks R2. I have a friend who has a side saddle putter. He likes it. A lot of people swear by it. I might try it sometime.

You're welcome Mike! I tried out several types of putting methods at a local golf shop (belly, chest, chin, low and hi side-saddle)and found that for me, the most accurate and simple to use was the long face-on side-saddle putter. Of course my golf buddies thought I'd wigged out when they saw me walking around the green "with the big broomstick". But when I started taking all their putting bets, all was well! Anyway, good luck and putt em' straight. R2
