Subject: Taken the Plunge... Might be a good candidate to follow on the forum

I'm the guy with a very short strong swing.
Stumbled across the 1-Iron Golf clubs only 3 days ago and today confirmed my order for a complete set of irons and the #3 wood. Got confirmation a few minutes ago that they're leaving for South Africa today - that's service!

My situation is probably a bit different to most as my game has dramatically improved over the past 4 months from core strengthening exercises, improved fitness and practice. As far as I can see, most people buy these clubs when they're going nowhere with their game or going downhill. Over the past 4 months my handicap has dropped from 15 to a 10 and I've played 2 games in the high 70s, mainly as a result of good driving and short game but not much between. I only make 2-4 GIRs per round as I often don't even attempt a GIR if I'm over 170yds out, rather choosing to play short and straight with a #7 or #8 iron into the fairway near the green, chip in, then putt. Never play a wood off the deck and even battle with my hybrids.

I just have a feeling that I could do even better if my irons were more consistent over 150yds resulting in more GIRs to putt for birdie more often.

Has anyone else bought these clubs when their game is on the up? What has your experience been?

Regards

Steve M

Steve,

I wouldn't assume most people buy these clubs out of desperation if that is what you mean by nowhere or game going downhill. I would merely assume people are buying these clubs because they are convinced they are a better tool, which I believe they are. You will discover this soon. I am sure your iron play will improve dramatically.

The best I ever played my home course was 8 over par with my old irons. Shortly after my purchase last year I shot 1 over. I still remember that flubbed pitch on the 18th hole that left me a long putt for par, which I missed. If I hadn't gotten in the way (thinking more about my score card than my shot), I would have had my first round at par. I shot other low scores last year, but that 1 over was my best effort. I suppose I will cross below the par barrier sometime this coming year. It's all about the short game now.

At a certain point golf is less about the rifle and more about the shooter. With 1 Iron clubs you get the "rifle" part of the equation out of the way. It's up to you to become the best shooter you can be. It sounds like you already do quite well, and I would guess with dedicated practice you will do even better.

Sincerely,

Michael

Thanks MR,
Many of the success stories I've read on the forum from using 1-Irons appeared to begin from the golfer battling to score or improve with conventional clubs - not necessarily desperation. In my case I've improved over the past few months with conventional clubs, mainly the short game.

When I scored a 78 3 weeks ago I only made 4 GIRs and no birdies, relying on good driving, chipping and putting. In fact I never had any realistic chance for birdie ie putting from inside 12-15 feet.

So... I'm desperate to play better mid/long irons so I can putt from within 15 feet more often. Bring on the 1-Irons!

A question Mike, has your handicap lowered since getting your 1-Irons?

Steve

Steve,

Can't help you on the handicap as I do not keep an official handicap. I was just thinking yesterday, that I need to stop being so lazy and actually accumulate the 20 scores necessary according to the USGA. I know my scores are lower, but I can not accurately gauge my progress by handicap. I have noticed a 5-7 shot improvement per round on average.

Keep up the short game work. It sounds like you are one game segment (long irons) away from being a scratch player. Keep us updated on your progress.

Michael

Steve: Glad you got the 1-Irons. They are GREAT clubs! After I got my 1-Irons, I got rid of all my hybrids, fairway woods and everything but my 1-Iron driver and a old 3-wood that I hit really well for long par-3s/short par-4s. After my tee-shot, all I need is the yardage and I can select the correct iron for the next shot. Follow the Playability tips exactly, and practice a lot with the 3-iron. I believe you will enjoy the smoothness and consistancy you will obtain with the new clubs. Have a great day! R2
