Subject: Grip Down

I have been using 1Irons for a few years - and this is not about the clubs. But almost every issue of a golf magazine has an instruction article that says to "grip down" an amount on the club. Seems to me that once one grips down, they have changed the whole dynamic of the swing, haveing to get closer to the ground- and that just doesn't make sense as a better way to hit the occasional shot. Anyone else feel this way?

Ken,

You are absolutely correct. You cannot arbitrarily apply conventional golf club techniques to single-length play because they are two completely different concepts.

David:

I fully understand. But to me, it doesn't even make sense to grip down with conventional clubs - just too many variables.

Ken,

Other than dramatically changing the dynamics of a golf club, one of the major reasons you do not want to choke down is eye coordination. Click on the following link for a full explanation: Consistency
