Subject: Chipping Set-Up

I have a question about chipping with the 1 irons. Do you put more of your weight on your left (for right-handed hitters)and move the handle slightly ahead of the ball (basic impact position)? This is standard instruction from just about everyone. Any reason to change that for the 1 irons. I understand ball is center of stance.

Paul: What you describe is pretty much the standard chipping instruction. I teach my students to keep their feet quite close together, weight on the middle or arch of the forward foot, toes flared about 15* for stability and the ball near center of stance. I also have them pick a target line alignment spot 6" to 12" in front of the ball and square the club face to that spot. I have them use the "gas-gauge" drill, which is to put a tee in the end of the grip and keep that tee near your forward arm thru the whole chip/swing so the gas gauge is always on "full" and stays very close to your forward arm. For a chip, there is no reason to break the wrists, and the tee helps teach my students the proper club shaft position and the "feeling" of the short swing. It's almost like an "extended putting motion". I also have them keep their nose pointed AT the ball until after impact. Also, keep your entire body as quiet as possible and maintain your spine angle thru impact. One more thought - practice as often as possible. Chipping is a "finese" shot and the weak point of most average player's games. Have a great day! R2
