Subject: My New 1 Irons

After reading and comtemplating about same-length clubs for some time now, I finally took the plunge and placed a new set of 1 Irons on order today. The 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee that comes with them is a very nice feature and helped me to feel safer in my investment. I will hope to come back and give some periodic progress reports.

I have received my 1 Irons, and, as David recommended, I took the 8-iron out to hit (but I also could not resist also taking along the 7).

I struck some solid shots with the 8, and then with the 7. Interestingly, I do believe the 7 went about 10 yards further than the 8.

The 1 Irons certainly have a different feel than my old PING G5's. I imagine one thing influencing that is the steel shaft as compared to my graphite-shafted G5's.

Although the 1 Irons do look somewhat cavity-backed, they appear to me to have a bit more of a blade-type clubhead as compared to my G5's. But that may just be an optical illusion.

So far, so good.

I think I am getting more comfortable with the idea of one ball placement and swing for all the irons, and liking it. I went out and hit about 60 balls yesterday, hitting all of the irons, including the remaining ones that I had yet to hit up until yesterday. I think I am ready to get out and give them a try on the course.

I took my new 1 Irons out to the course yesterday. So far, I think it's looking like my yardages with the 1 Irons are going to be about the same as with my old PING G5's. I did hit some good shots but had too much operator error with some of my shots (including shots with old driver and fairway wood) to post a good score.

I've had the new 1 Irons for about 2 weeks now, and have been practicing on the range with them consistently. I think it was good for me to also take them out on the course. Hitting them out on the course is a bit different than hitting them out on the practice range.

Chuck: Sounds like you are starting to get used to the new 1-Irons. Two things that helped me play them very consistently were 1)be sure to use a center-of-stance ball position for every club and 2)keep your lower body very quiet, especially during the back-swing. I've seen a lot of golfers that "sway" forward during the swing and try to "help" the ball. The way the 1-Irons are designed, it's best to just swing the club and let the loft do the work. You mentioned you're still using your old driver; if you're not hitting it well it may be too long for you. Match your WTF to the 1-Iron driver chart. My WTF is 34.5" and I was using a Cleveland HiBore with a 45" shaft (too long for me!). My 1-Iron driver has a 43" shaft and is much more consistent. One thing you may want to try with your old driver is choking down the grip about 1/2" at a time until you find a spot where hits are consistently in the same spot on the club face; then mark the grip with a rubber band and try it out on the course. Anyway, keep us informed of your progress and hit 'em straight! R2

R2:

Thanks for the reminders on setup and hitting.

My thougts are that I will probably try the 1 Iron driver and fairway woods in the future. Are you playing all 1 Iron clubs? If so, is it Driver, 3-Wood, 5-Wood, and then down to the irons?

Thanks Again,
Chuck

Chuck: To answer your question, I have a full set of 1-Irons, driver and the four wedges. I also play several hybrid clubs, and some custom-built clubs which I hit well. I normally only carry the clubs that I need for the course I'm playing, so I change clubs a lot! I am starting to use more hybrids as my swing speed drops off. Two of my students use full sets of 1-Irons, and both of them really like the fairway woods. Take care, and hit 'em straight! R2
