Subject: Ball Position

Just learning about this concept of one length. Makes great sense. I am curious if you set up irons in the middle of your stance for all, is there a specific distance from your front based on custom club length. ?

Mike: Not quite sure what you mean by "front" so I will try to cover "all the bases". If you are talking about distance from your front foot, you play all the 1-Irons from about the middle of your stance. You need to go to the range and try small adjustments forward/rearward until you find exactly what works best for your swing. I have several students playing 1-Irons and each of them uses a slightly different ball position - but all are very, very close to center-of-stance. The driver and fairway woods should be played a little closer to your front foot, but again, you need to find what works best for your particular swing. If you are talking about distance from the front of your body, the ball should "appear" to be somewhere between your nose and your chin when you are properly set up and ready to start the swing. Your weight should be distributed over the middle of your feet; not on your toes (ball too far away from your body) and not on your heals (ball too close to your body). I've found over the years that if your set-up is correct and you are not on your toes or heals, the ball seems to magically appear between your nose and chin. Then it's just a matter of pre-loading the rear foot and making your swing - the same swing for every iron. The difference in club loft is what gives you the nice yardage differences. Take care, R2

Steve: I am not a professional golfer. I am a certified instructor, age 71, and teach beginning students and those with disabilities. I post often on this website because there are a lot of basic questions asked that need straight-forward, basic answers. I play both the 1-Irons and the GRIA hybrids. Take care, r2

Hi Roy

You seem to know a great deal about golf. I have had the full set of 1 irons for a couple of years now but have played very little. It is hard to evaluate the clubs for that reason. I have hit some amazing shots at times and not so good. I guess I need to make time to get out and play. All the best.

Mike, interestingly enough I use the 10 finger grip for my 1Iron driver, but the Vardon grip for my 1Irons....I also use 1 inch back from center position for my 3-4 irons, middle position for my 5-7 irons and 1 inch forward from middle for my 8-wedges....I have to or I hook with my short irons and straight left to slice my low irons if I don't change my ball position 1 inch either way!!!
