I have been playing single length irons since the early stages of Davids single length design from way back to the Maltby design and outburst irons.

The so called advanced designs is nothing but marketing. There is only so much you can do with the confined space of an iron.

This was maxed out years ago. Now 3D printed, irons, cupped face, reinforced faces and so on. and new to middle HC players still cant hit them.

The facts are the companies are making the irons tooo strong in loft and shaft length. This is where most of the extra distance comes from when you have a good strike.

However This creates a disaster in the shorter wedges because now you have to carry even more wedges to make up for the stronger lofted irons. The simpler the face the better. figure out the longest iron you can hit, after that fit in a good fairway wood. Noticed I said fairway wood or hybrid which ever works best to fill in that larger gap.

I also have a standard set along with my 1irons. I can go back and forward between sets no problem. In fact the 1irons also improved my so called standard set striking also.

The only thing I would like to see is in future is possibly going to a Bimatrix shaft as they called in the early days, a shaft half graphite and lower part steel.

quote-Secondly, if this isn't the kind of advancement that is considered to be enough to justify a change, what would?
eventually there may be a break through that may justify a change.

lets look at what other manufacturers are doing different that has not proven to make a vast difference? using single length.

Using various designs to manipulate where the weight is in the iron, example, printed insert designs, Hollow body, adding weight lower on the face, different face designs to increase ball speed and trajectory. Different lie angles.
Different shaft flexes or specs within the set to either reduce wedge performance but increase longer iron performance.

Very expensive shafts Like Edel uses making sets over 2500.00. and within the set the shafts of wedges, middle irons and longer irons are different.

But yet arguably the poster child for single length uses and older design head from cobra, and his custom LA shafts that fit him and all the shafts are the same.

The biggest difference is that the industry is so stuck on certain trajectories and launch angles they are stuck.

again they will come out with a different looking, Iron, Another driver promising longer distance, wedges that spin even more and so on. Can they ever get it right?

And has these changes been so advanced that you have played the best of your life with them. Most unlikely. at least you have a fighting chance with 1irons. Let your game do the talking stay the course and practice with them.

The truth is the 1irons are not magic you still have to put in the time. its just reducing variables. I never mention what I play until they ask me.

My bag is a mixed bag 1irons from 5-LW Ping driver G425 44.5" added weight to head. Ping 4 wood 16.50 and 20o hybrid, and Old TM putter. what ever lets you play well. if it works don't change it. But I understand its human nature to try the new stuff. But what happens is it ends up on E-Bay and you lost at least half of what you paid.

A few try 1irons and say it was not for them. My next question is how long did you play them.A week 2 weeks? But they keep on buying into the new club designs only to get disappointed again. and the Vicious cycle again.
