We have seven assorted turkey hens - one Spanish Black that is three, four others that are two, and two that are one year old (one of which is the 3yr old's daughter).
They were all "barking" up a storm, calling for a tom to come wandering through the chainlink pen, after waltzing over the 6' privacy fence and managing to evade Sobaka, our Great Pyr. No such luck, but they called and called.
Their collective libidos urged me to ask about for a serviceable man for them, and lo and behold, we absconded with our friend's Royal Palm tom. (and he is a hottie, let me tell you)
We put him into their pen, indoors, and to our amazement three of the hens lined up and "presented" before he even gathered his wits.
One of the [2yr old] Bourbon Red hens (lower in the pecking order) puffed up like a tom would, even going so far as to fan her tail! Then she got in line with the rest of the girls and poor Tom had to figure out who he was going to cover first, next, and so on!
I got flustered (too much turkey action for little ol me) so I left.
They've all been covered. No one is getting beat up. And the tom is the only one who is puffing and strutting.
No one has resumed laying egggs (we were getting about six a day, from seven hens) since we shut them all up inside and introduced Tommy.... but he's only here for another week and then it's back to Carrie's for some much needed rest.
HOPEFULLY all the girls will go back to laying, and I'll have to subject myself to store-bought eggs while we cross our fingers and hope for a poult invasion.
