CARLYLE, Ill. (AP) - State environmentalists are turning to commercial fishermen in hopes of curtailing the spread of Asian carp in southern Illinois.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says it's hiring fishermen to net the fish from the Kaskaskia River below the Carlyle Lake spillway.

The fishing will last for three weeks, and begins this week.

Asian carp threaten native fish such as bass, bluegill and crappie because they multiply rapidly and take over the food chain. They also endanger boaters and skiers because of their propensity to jump out of the water at the sound of a motor.

The trial DNR contract allows crews to remove Asian carp below the spillway using gill and trammel nets.
