Nearly all schools that have been around for a while, will have a complaint registered against them. Their are formal complaints like the ones lodged with the Council of Labor Affairs and informal complaints like the ones put up here or on Daves ESL Cafe.
Formal complaints usually mean the school does not have the quanxi or know how to pay off officials.
Informal complaints vary but schools with multiple complaints should be avoided.
SSETT researches complaints both formal and informal attempting to ascertain their validity.
It is fairly simple to tell how many complaints have been filed and by who .
As a general rule most complaints have some validity to them.
The most common complaints come from teachers about schools that have employed teachers claiming that they can issue a valid ARC. They either get an ARC from another company or none at all. They then sack the teacher or force them out without pay keeping up to a months pay and sometimes more. Because the school never issued a legitimate ARC, teachers are reluctant to file a formal complaint or seek redress through established institutions.
That is where SSETT comes in. When the system fails we do not. Our advice is simple:
If you can' get a totally leagal ARC, don't get one at all.
If you want to research a school try Google and Yahoo first, then contact SSETT. We often gets complaints not made public.
Good luck,
A.
