If you are fluent in English, your life is easier. Many street namesare displayed in both Chinese and English at intersections in Taipei, and many people (especially the younger generation) can exchange ideas with you in English, though they might be shy and make some mistakesin their words as they do not use English in their everyday lives.
Nevertheless, understanding each other should not be a problem. In the country side you might encounter some problems though, since English displays might be rare.
