As sad as it is, ESL/EFL teaching is a dangerous job.
And, torrid cross-cultural love affairs as high on the danger list -- not just in Taiwan -- try Arabia.
Actually, you have more opportunity to actually fall in love in Taiwan than in almost all of the rest of Asia. Japanese and Koreans are very closed, so are Indonesian and Malayans. Mainland China's one child policy keeps police tracking your sex life. Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam all have AIDs big time.
I have known of another teacher that died in a suspious fire in Kaohsiung in the arms of her Taiwanese boy friend. One ex-pat said it was a jealous ex-pat that set the fire, but police found a crazy Taiwanese man that confessed (a fall guy?).
Who is to say -- but conspiracy theory and paranoia go along way toward telling you that it is time for you to go home.
By the way, I was in contact with one of the teachers shot in Malaysia and airlifted to OZ before she moved there (11 shot, 2 killed, she survived and went home). She was teaching in TaiJung, but she did not like it so went to Malaysia where she could earn $50,000US/year under armed guard.
Kathmandu wants English teachers very badly, but Communist rebels are shooting people. How about Argentina or the Ivory Coast. Or maybe Russia?
Well, Taiwan looks pretty good in comparison. It is a dangerous world.
But, sex, drugs and rock n' roll have killed their share everywhere and bad people are born everywhere. So are good people.
Generally, if you hang with the night life, you are meeting preditory people. Just dare to be dull. Go slow. Be kind. You will live longer.
