As an old Taiwan hand, I can tell you attacks in dark stairwells at night are the "Mode of Operation " of Chinese organized crime syndicates.
I had a business partner in Hong Kong nearly killed the same way. Blow to the back of the head late one night when she was coming home. She had just won a civil suit against one of her previous manufactures.
Attacks like this and hit and run are the tell tale signs of organized crime involvement, in the greater China area. If this was the result of a contract dispute, I would not be surprised.
Still it could just be a coincidence, the sad thing is we will never know. At the first hint of organized crime involvement, the local police close the case as fast as possible and loose the evidence. This is Taiwan, enter at your own risk.
