The only thing I knew (as I was back in Canada already) was that Yvie had been harassed by a man (boyfriend?) for a while and was scared and had told friends that she feared for her dog's life (he had threatened to hurt her dog). The night she died he was coming over to visit and to talk- and she was going to tell him it was over once and for all. I guess he was giving her a hard time for trying to end the relationship. Her freinds knew this part and I believe they told the Chiayi police. This is just what I heard word-of-mouth from English teachers who were still there. I was furious at the "news" reports because they left out half the story. Teachers called to the police station for questioning/info were scared because "black cars with tinted windows" were idling across the street and taking note of who was giving info. All very suspicious. Yvie's South African friends who knew what she was going through in the days leading up to her death fled Taiwan pretty shortly afterward.

Thanks for your interest; it's nice to know strangers (did you know her?) care more than a lot of people who actually knew her. The fact that there wasn't a massive protest in Chiayi after she died pissed me off so much. I understand being scared of the people involved, but sweeping it under the carpet like that is so wrong. I wasn't good friends with Yvie but I'm a lot like her- loved the outdoors and exercise, have a dog from Taiwan, socialized but also liked being alone at times; she was the same age as me, etc... I often thought how it it could have been me, had I become involved in some guy who would later turn whack-o on me.

I'm haunted by the last words she spoke to me. Just before I left Chiayi in June, '01, I bumped into her at Starbuck's and we chatted for a bit. She said she loved Chiayi and would be there "until the day she died." She deserves justice.
