Taiwan has made great achievement in its striving to become a working democracy, but the world continues to be fascinated with a rising China. How does Taiwan go forward in its search for identity its troublesome building up of a civil society in the context of the worldˇ¦s fixation on China? Considering Taiwan's evolving self-image, its contradictions and the potential for political polarization and the trivialization of public discourse in democratic societies, how does that self-image square, or doesn't, with views of Taiwan from the outside?
