The first term of our current one-year literacy project is now complete. Participants (age range 9 to 14 with reading and/or other literacy difficulties) routinely complete teacher-designated exercises as homework assignments from a dedicated website. This online strategy ensures delivery irrespective of the operating system or age of the users’ home computer. Participants bring work completed at home online (printouts or exercise books) to school on a daily basis to read to or be checked by a staff member. The project ends in July.
A very large number of schools and parents, not involved in the project have discovered the site and are also using the online materials ‘unofficially.’ Schools with pupils for whom English is not their first language, are significant users and schools in non-English speaking countries in Europe, Africa, South America and Asia appear to be using them as a component of their English Language teaching curriculum. Some European International Schools have circulated the URL and now use the site as an integral part of their English teaching.
So many ‘unofficial’ users are swamping the site that I have created an additional website and have copied some programmes over to a new experimental site for anyone to use. I intend to add resources continuously and to greatly extend the number of titles in the supported library over time, provided of course that the site remains popular. Its most important feature according to users, is its consistent accessibility to pupils and parents at home and therefore its potential as a productive homework assignment or classroom resource. Unrestricted open access is available to anyone or any school and its pupils at home on their own computers at schoolwork.bz online. There are no costs or registration requirements and the site will carry no adverts. I do hope however that users will advise me how they use it and what additional resources they would like to see added. Only that way can I hope to cater to their needs.
