My hubby and I worked for ALV at a summer camp about ten years ago. Despite the shortcomings, we had a fabulous, rich, cultural experience.
We arrived with no ESL teaching experience, didn't know what to expect but survived. If you go, figure out what you want to teach the kids - anything you think they'd enjoy is ok. You need to use your imagination, try and talk to an elementary school teacher and investigate as much as you can. You'll be there for several weeks. You might want to have several themes that you work with a week at a time. If things are still the same, you won't have any teaching supplies whatsoever. You will need to figure out how to find some in your home country. I think they have a photocopy machine and if you take good supplies, other teachers will probably beg you for a copy of yours.
The owner holds out the suggestion that you will receive a bonus at the end of your session. Don't count on it and you won't be disappointed. Just overlook what you don't like and focus on the kids, the experience and whatever else makes you happy. You will work long hours so might get to a pub around 8pm or so. If you can stay on after the camp is finished, do go and explore Taipei. Befriend Chinese people. They will give you information, perhaps invite you to a night market, or a festival you might not have heard about, etc. Soak it up and enjoy.
