The Form of the Month for January 2001 is the Terzanelle. Anyone who wants to face the challenge and write a poem in this form may post their poem here on the Fatted Calf with the word "terzanelle" in the message line.
The Terzanelle is of French and Italian origin, an adaptation of terza rima into villanelle form. It is nineteen lines long, composed of fiver interlocking triplets and a final quatrain. The middle line of each triplet is a repeton that reappears as the final line of the succeeding triplet, except the middle line of the last triplet, which reappears in the quatrain.
Here is a diagram:
1. A1-refrain 10. d
2. B-repeton 11. E-repeton
3. A2-refrain 12. D-repeton
4. b 13. e
5. C-repeton 14. F-repeton
6. B-repeton 15. E-repeton
