Hi, I have a new 58 Sea Skiff with plywood lapstrake hull. I has ablative anti-fouling paint but I need to paint it green again. It is now in fresh water and on a boat lift so I don't need ablative anti-fouling paint.
Can I use a stripper or will this hurt the glue and so will I have to sand it?
Does anyone recommend an undercoat of poly resin like West Systems or primer. I am not planning fiberglass. Any help or suggested sources are appreciated. Bright work is in pretty good shape. Thanks

I own 2 1957 sea skiffs one of which is almost done. Having just completed my hull paint I can share with you what I did.
I stripped the entire hull to bare wood by sanding. I had a problem with oil soaked areas under the engine which had gone all the way through so I put two coats of CPES on the exterior sanding between coats. This gave me a solid base coat on which to paint without fear of peeling. I then refilled all screw holes with 3m premium filler, primed with Interlux base coat then applied multiple coats of Interlux Brightside polyurethane sanding between. The result is a very hard high gloss finish that absolutely looks like glass. A long tedius process but well worth it in my opinion. Just remember, all time spent preparing the surface before painting will give tremendous paybacks.
