Gee, heated debate. The Bible tells people not to be easily provoked, but look at the Book Of Job, as stated before. Withstanding things was the key to heaven in his case, plus he got the added bonus of having everything restored to him sevenfold here on earth. What is better, to fight for your rights only to find that all things were gone from you or gaining seven times the possessions you lost? Anyway, obviously the idea of turning the other cheek means more to some than others. In history, we learned that the founders of the United States believed in God and the Bible, but they suffered for lond enough until it was too much to bear. Then they lashed out, and ended the "handing down of crap" in America for their founders. The slaves who became free during the Civil War took as much as they could but they too fought for their freedom. You're right, the idea of passivity wasn't the main message of Christianity. The idea behind turning the other cheek is not to allow others to oppress you, but rather to keep you from lashing out in anger and sinning by killing others.

That's a really long post.
