The cat litter I understand very well. Beyond it's obvious use it's a good aid for tire traction, and works cheaper/better than salt for icy stairs/sidewalks/driveways. I carry several bags for weight in the car boot for winter, just in case I have to drive anywhere.

I also remember being on Okinawa in the 60's during monsoon season, when the supply ships couldn't dock for sometimes days, and there was NO cat litter. Gawd, it was ridiculous, but Siamese cats especially don't like upheaval or change in their routines, and having to force them to do their business in shredded newspaper was REALLY a pain in the ears, while they whinged and squalled about the deterioration of comfort in their domain. It was the strangest thing to stand in the commissary, staring at empty shelves, commiserating with total strangers who of course also owned the breed of choice on the island. Candles and milk were the other items in short supply back in those days. There was ALWAYS enough beer, but we necessarily learned to drink it warm without snivelling when the power went down. People AND cats are indeed strange.
