Subject: I am a foolish slacker... I just now checked the board... so Tamsyn, forgive the last birthday gift...

Thus begins the 'on the road' snapshot series. Little flashes of conversations and moments they are. Fill in the time between with beautiful and sad traveling music (think the Weakerthans cause they're always playing softly in the background of my mind... think Mew cause I love them right now) and slow motion seat changes and long periods of silence as our boys stare at the passing countryside out their windows.

Or don't. That's just how I see it in my head. Do whatever you like.

“Alright people, we’ve got 15 hours of boring highway ahead of us. There’s only one thing for it.” I announce.

“An insanely long game of ‘these are the Dave’s I know’?” Jonas.

“Several zillion rounds of The Alphabet game?” Kyle.

“No. We have to have a Deep Conversation. We must share and grow!”

“Or we could have a Rhyme Out.” Kyle again.

Rhyme outs are a family tradition. Or at least a me and Kyle tradition. They’re exactly what they sound like. We played them endlessly on family trips when we were younger. When Celery started coming along he played with us.

There’s a long pause.

“Bog.”

“Dog.”

“Smog.”

“Fog.”

“Hog.”

You get the general idea.

“Have you talked to him?” There might as well be a capital H.

“No, I called him a couple times, after you…” Kyle shrugs. “But his cell phone must have been turned off or whatever, cause he never answered.”

“Jonas?”

“No one told me we were allowed to try to talk to him.”

“Oh.”

“Who’s up for another round of ‘These are the Dave’s I know’?”

A conversation between me and Kyle.

ME: “We should talk about something.”

KYLE: “We should?”

ME: “Yeah. We’re on a road trip. Logic dictates that eventually we’re going to have to share and grow.”

KYLE: “Logic?”

ME: “Well, okay. Maybe not logic. But history. Or at the very least, roadtrip movies.”

KYLE: “Have you even SEEN ‘Roadtrip’?”

ME: “Roadtrip movies not staring Tom Green.”

KYLE: “So, what do you want to talk about?”

ME: “I don’t know.”

KYLE: “Any chance you’d be willing to talk about Celery?”

ME: Silence.

KYLE: “How bout we have Lord of the Rings quote off?”

ME: “THIS WILL BE THE DEATH OF THE HOBBITS!”

KYLE: “What is this new devilry?”

ME: “IT TIS IN THE GROUD!”

KYLE: “Sam and I must get to Bree.”

ME: “BROOANNG!”

KYLE: “What the hell was that?”

ME: “The horn of Gondor.”

KYLE: Laughter.

PS, sorry about that last one. Just some random insanity written right now. I've actually done that in a quote off. People laughed at me.
