Well, I realize that none of you know me all that well (being a newbie and all...), but I did say that I would try and get something up here for Karla's little free for all here. So... just let me know what you guys think (if it sucks, I won't put anything else up here... he he), this is a story I've been working on and rewriting absolutely FOREVER. Hope you likes!
----------------------------------------------------
I awoke to someone shaking me hard by the arm.
"Chris," a deep voice whispered, "Chris, wake up."
Opening my eyes slightly, a blurry figure loomed toward me, still having a strong grip on my arm. Once I got accustomed to the darkness and my vision focused a bit, I realized that it was my older brother hovering over me. He was crouched down next to the bed in a clumsy way, like how a giant might crouch down to see the people below him. Erik wasn't really that tall- five foot ten- but the wide breadth of his shoulders made him seem larger.
"Erik, are you nuts? It's got to be, like, 3:00 in the morning!" I groaned miserably
"Actually, it's 3:30. That's a really good guess though." he grinned widely, reminding me of the Cheshire cat from Alice in Wonderland.
"I have school in the morning, you jerk." I moaned, tiredly flinging a spare pillow in his direction "What're you doing here, anyway? I thought you weren't supposed to be here until Saturday. You're early, you big idiot."
"I'll ignore that." he glared at me "The class I usually have today was canceled, so I decided to come home early and surprise my baby sister." he grinned again, squeezing my arm
"Yeah, you surprised me all right." I mumbled "How about you leave me alone and let me sleep?" I said, tearing my arm from his fingers
"Oh come on, stay up with me, please? I'll convince mom and dad that you're sick so you can stay home from school."
"I can't, I have a test."
"All the more reason to stay home. Besides, it's not like seventh grade is so important that you can't miss one day."
"Erik, I'm totally ready for this test, I'm not gonna miss it."
"Please?" he pleaded "I skippe- I mean, missed a ton of school in seventh grade and look at me now!"
"Yeah, you still don't know which way is up."
"Come on, I'm totally wired and I need some company."
"Aww, just shut up." I said, pulling my blanket over my head just before the realization came over me "Hey, you got your hair cut." I pushed the blanket back down
"Yeah, I thought it was time for a change." he smirked
"I've never seen you with a buzz cut before." I mumbled, staring at his black, now chopped locks in amazement.
Erik's hair had always been a thing of pride for him. For as long as I could remember, he had kept it shoulder length to "show his heritage" as he put it. My dad always said that Erik was just trying to show that he was proud of the Native American culture, and of course "the whole rebel image never hurt either". That made the whole thing even harder to understand- Erik would've rather chop off his own arm than cut his precious hair.
"What about showing your heritage?" I asked
"That's not such a big deal anymore. I mean, people can see my heritage just by looking at me, right? Besides, it's kinda hard to get people in the real world to take you seriously when you have long hair. It just doesn't work."
"It looks good." I told him "I can actually see your face now without all that hair in the way."
"Thanks."
"Okay, I complimented your hair. Now will you let me sleep?"
"You sure about not staying home?"
"Go away." I mumbled, starting to turn away from him
He flopped the pillow on my face as he started toward the door.
"Going once, going twice, gone!" he whispered "Too bad for you, you have to go to school tomorrow. Night!" he said, closing the door behind him
***********************************************************
"Typical." Lenni laughed. "Leave it to Erik to do something like that."
"It wasn't funny." I insisted, glancing past her into the vast school cafeteria we were in for a moment. "If I hadn't been half asleep..." I let my voice trail off.
Yeah, and if it had been you it wouldn't have been so funny.
"Yeah, whatever." Lenni rolled her dark eyes at me.
"We just know you too well." Heather piped up, wrapping her left arm around my shoulder and squeezing. "We know that you wouldn't hurt him unless you had a really good reason."
Like waking me up in the middle of the night just for company.
"Hair." I choked as her thick, rust colored mane of curls flew into my face when she suddenly turned her head.
"Oh, sorry." she giggled as she wrapped her hair into a quick ponytail. "That's why I love your hair, Chris. It's so straight, and it never gets in anybody's way/"
"Acutally, I'd rather have the curls." I told her.
"Not this again. Can we please have just one lunch period where we don't talk about hair?" Lenni groaned, putting her palms on her forehead as if she had a migraine.
Silence filled the table for a few seconds.
"Hey, where's Gaby?" Heather asked suddenly.
I swear, sometimes that girl would explode if she couldn't talk for more than a minute.
"She's making up a Psychology test she missed yesterday." I answered.
"When I get to eleventh grade, I am SO not taking Psych. Too many tests." Heather mumbled.
"I wouldn't bet on that." Lenni's voice came from under her hands.
"Huh?" Heather asked.
You don't want to know. Trust me.
"Never mind, she's in one of her moods." I whispered to Heather.
"I heard that!" Lenni said, "Heather, you'll t Psych in eleventh grade and you'll even take it in college. So don't even try to tell me that you're never going to take it."
Told ya you didn't want to know.
"Stop that!" Heather yelled. "I hate it when you do that!"
"Let's just get lunch, okay?" I said, trying to diffuse the mini-argument.
Anything to stop that screeching Heather was doing.
"Not to burst your bubble or anything, but I saw the menu earlier. The 'food' today is mystery meat."
"Oh" I wrinkled my nose with the disgusting thought. "Nevermind then."
"I'm going to the snackbar, I'll be back." Heather sighed as she left the table.
"You know, you should really stop doing that around her, it totally freaks her out." I hissed at Lenni.
"That's exactly why I do it." she grinned.
"Look, you know that she doesn't undertand. The whole ESP thing is totally over her head."
"It's not my fault that she's naive."
"No, but it's your fault that she still doesn't get it after being friends with you for so long. Maybe if you explained it to her..."
"Yeah, sure, that'll work." Lenni rolled her eyes, "I think pretending to be possessed by Satan would be more effective."
"Don't even!" I warned. "That's so totally not funny."
Okay, so that was a lie. It would be totally funny, not to mention interesting to watch.
"Sorry. I'll think about taking it easy, okay?" she said, pulling on her dark brown braids. "But I'm not gonna promise anything."
Neither of us spoke for a moment, both swimming in our own thoughts.
"Do you know if Erik is going to see Gaby while he's back?" Lenni asked suddenly, the question written all over her dark face.
"They're boyfriend and girlfriend, why wouldn't he?" I thought for a minute. "Why?"
"Well, you know Gaby's friend Mark?"
I felt myself melting at the mention of his name. Mark Hernandez, Gaby's gorgeous best friend who also happened to be the captain of the varsity basketball team.
"Yeah." I tried to hide my moment of weakness quickly before Lenni picked up on it. She stared at me with a sad look on her face.
"You know, he's never going to LIKE you like you."
"Huh?" What're you talking about?" I asked, faking innocence.
"You know what I mean. He's just... you're not his type."
I slouched at this statement, knowing that she was probably right.
"Yeah, whatever." I mumbled, trying to acr as if I didn't care.
"So what'd I miss?" Heather asked as she sat down next to me, chocolate milk and nachos in hand.
"Not much." I mumbled, still trying to decipher why Lenni had brought the subject up in the first place.
"Oh, I saw Brian while I was up there." she smiled, elbowing me in the side. "How is your boyfriend these days, anyway?"
"He's not my boyfriend, how many times do I have to tell you that? We're friends, that's it." I insisted.
"Well, being that he's your best friend, maybe you could explain a few things." Lenni started.
"Like what?"
"Like how come he's gained so much weight in the past few months. He used to be as skinny as a rail but now he looks like the Goodyear blimp." Heather said.
"That's a bit of an exaggeration, don't you think?" I glared at her.
"And how he's so smart but he never seems to hand in homework anymore." Lenni pointed out.
"And he's become pretty hostile." Heather frowned. "I said hi to him in the hall yesterday and I thought he was going to rip my face off."
"I really don't know." I sighed. "Your guess is as good as mine."
"So what exactly do you plan on doing about it?" Heather asked.
"What do you mean, plan on doing?"
"Oh, come on, you think we don't know you?" Heather laughed, "You're gonna do something. You can never stay out of somebody else's problems for long."
"Okay, so you're right about that- I am gonna do something. I'm going to figure this thing out even if it kills me."
