Subject: Yes, the stages were smaller than our dancers our accustomed to - but the feis committee had to work with the space they were given. The larger problem is dancers who lack control and choreography that promotes hurling oneself blindly across the stage - more inside.

The situation wasn't ideal, but I was grateful for a feis weekend with 2 opportunities to dance within a reasonable drive. It was interesting to watch these dancers figure out a smaller size stage. By and large, most dancers just adjusted - they turned to the front to kick instead of kicking at the wall or shortened their steps to avoid it. The dancers who lacked control, however, were a different story. Most are from schools that are taught to plow right into dancers who are in their way, to "command" the stage. Your dancers shouldn't be performance monkeys, they should be able to think, adjust, and control themselves. For any dancer who was shoved against a wall, that is on the dancers on the stage, not the feis committee. Let's teach our dancers some grace, some dance etiquette, and most importantly, how to think.

Much of the blame falls on the choreography. Any move that requires a dancer to turn abruptly and charge is not appropriate, as dancers do not dance alone except for the set. So much choreography has dancers flinging themselves across the stage like acrobats, again increasing the risk. If there were more actual dancing and fewer stunts and tricks, safety would not be an issue. If CLRG is going to embrace this kind of choreography, maybe they need to look at how all feises are run. Certainly dancing 2 and 3 at a time was appropriate for the older style of dancing, but with the current style of dancing, collisions are going to happen. Can you imagine a feis where all rounds were done individually, though?
