Irish points are odd. While the system was created to combat inconsistent scoring systems used by individual judges (one judge's 90pts might be the same rank as another's 75pts), it is far from truly being a fair system. The main reason is the drastic different from one rank to the next. 1st place is 100 Irish points, while 2nd place drops to 75 Irish points an it gets worse from there. What may have happened in your child's case is some of the other dancers received one or two very high rankings and one or two very low ones, while your dance had low scores across the board (not a slam, just they way it was this time). Example: Competitior 1 received a 3rd, a 4th and a 14th. Third place is worth 65pts, a 4th worth 60pts and 14th worth 37pts. Combined, Competitor 1 earned 162 Irish points. Competitor 2 received two 10th places and an 6th place (43pts, 43pts and 53pts) for a total of 139 pts. You didn't provide the overall rankings for each judge, but we'll pretend they were 9th, 9th and 10th (45pts, 45pts and 43pts) for a total of 133pts. This is all assuming no ties, of course. It may look on the surface that your dancer was 9th or 10th place, but because of the subjectivity of ID judging, placements can be all over the place. When my daughter was in PC, she won a competition in spite of not placing 1st in any dance with any of the judges and only being ranked 1st by one judge (3 and 4th with the other two). She was also kept out of 1st twice in spite of being ranked 1st by two judges but being tanked by a third judge (same judge, btw). Gotta love that the commission has no interest in rectifying the system to make it more fair!
