Subject: Non-Profits Not Entitled to Property Tax Exemptions

The state Supreme Court ruled in November that non-profit organizations that provide housing are not entitled to property tax exemptions. The court's reason was that the people that live in those building would not be entitled to the exemptions if they owned the building.

Yet, there are over 175 properties in Milwaukee that are getting letters from the assessor's office advising that they might be affected by the new law. Some of these organizations are the Archdiocese of Milwaukee and Milwaukee AIDS Housing. Many of these organizations have advised that they may not be able to continue operations due to the new law.

The state stands to get about $4.1 million due to the law change, and the city will get about $1.5 million.

What about the individuals that are living in low income housing operated by non-profit organizations? If may of the non-profit organizations are not able to continue operations, where are these individuals going to live? In church housing, wait they are now taxed too...

Can someone please provide insight as to the reason for this law? If the answer is simply that the state needs money, I know that. I am hoping for a deeper answer, otherwise... well... otherwise I am very disgusted.
