Subject: How to recover an "oiled" walnut slab

Hi all.

My mother has a slab of black walnut (approx 1.5" thick and 16" x 36")that has been sanded to about 180 grit and then oiled. I do not know what kind of oil was used on it at this point but you can imagine the dull lifeless hunk of wood that it is right now.

Before you all fuss at me it is important to note that she lives in Chicago, knows very little about woodworking, did not talk to me prior to doing it, and is using this slab on top of an iron base as a table. Oh... and this slab came from my grandfathers favorite black walnut tree.

What I want to do is give it the finish it deserves but I have never worked with a "pre-oiled" piece of walnut. I am wondering if I can just scrape and/or sand it as is to get it ready for a proper oil finish (as per Ray Lancon's instructions). Or, should I use some sort of stripper or solvent on it first to remove as much of the previous finish as possible prior to sanding it? Or, should I just treat it like a piece that has had its first coat of oil, wet sand it with 320, and go from there?

I appreciate any help yall can provide. I am not going up there till January so you have some time to think about it.

Thanks again,

Michael
