I think the problem is the sanding sealer. I've never used Minwax Sanding Sealer, but if it is like other sanding sealers, it dries to a hard finish. Minwax oil stains are designed to go onto bare wood, or onto conditioned wood (wood conditioner), soak in, and carry pigment into the wood pores. A sanding sealer would prevent this from happening.

There's no magic with soft maple.

Sand the top and drawer fronts down to bare wood, use a wood conditioner, the apply the stain. If you are going for a dark finish, really flood the surface and leave it there a long time, almost letting it flash dry until you start wiping. If it gets too dark, use your mineral spirits technique. THEN use a sanding sealer, and finally your topcoat.
