Subject: bad NiCd drill batteries

I have 2 craftsman cordless drill batteries, old NiCd, that won't charge. One is not even all that old, but with no use for a couple of years, does not even register on the charger. The drill is very powerful, with much more torque than most of what is now available. Ideally I would like to replace the batteries with Lithium of some type, as they last much longer, especially when used infrequently. However, it is not worth spending a huge amount of money for an old drill. Any suggestions?
