I usually use "buttons".

Route a groove around the inside of the table's apron 1/2" from the top. Rabbit the edge of a board that's about 2" wide so that the outcrop on the board will match the groove in the apron. You really want the slot in the apron to be about 1/16" lower than the button so you can get som clamping action.

With a single screw, fasten each block to the tabletop so it hooks the top to the slot in the apron. When you position the button, allow some slop so that the top has space to expand and contract.

I've also had good luck using #20 biscuits instead of shaping the blocks. Use the joiner to make slots in the apron and button. Don't glue the biscuits. Let them float in the slots. Anything that confines the top's expansion could cause it to crack.
