Ellen, for cutting 1/4" thick acrylic letters, I would suggest using either a scroll saw or a ROTOZIP tool. You can get scroll saws for as low as $100 and as high as $1700. Dewalt makes a good mid-priced scroll saw for about $400. The type of saw blades you use for cutting acrylic is an important factor. At sloanswoodshop.com they write: "All the acrylic sheets come with a protective paper on them, leave that paper on then place a layer of Duct Tape on the area to be cut (on top of the paper). Then glue your pattern on top of the Duct Tape and cut as usual. This will stop the melting you may have heard of. Using this process and a Double Skip Tooth blade we are able to cut at full speed with no melting. I would advise not to stack cut acrylic sheets more than two layers high."

If you do not need to cut these often and just need some occasional help, you can send an e-mail to our club's webmaster describing what you need and he will forward it to see if anyone can cut them for you. You could also come to one of our club meetings with your patterns and make your request during our "Problems and Solutions" segment.
