Brett,

I don't consider myself an expert, so remember, free advise is worth what you pay for it:

Your bits shouldn't be sliding, You should make sure they seat all the way into the collet. You also want to make sure you have the right size collet for the bit you are using. Most bits come in 1/2 or 1/4 shanks. If you are using 1/4 sanks with a 1/2 collet, they would hard to tighten down. Most of what you buy in a big box store are 1/4 and will work find with the smaller horsepower routers. The bigger routers (2+ horsepower) will normally come with collets for both the 1/2 and 1/4 shanks.

As to brands, there are a lot of good ones out there, but there is a trade off in price and quality. The better ones are real expensive. Freud is a good brand. Make sure they are carbide tipped and they will last longer. Good ones can be resharpened. Cheep ones are more disposable. Woodline USA will provide a lifetime guarantee on their bits.

The other thing you have to pay attention to is speed. The bigger the bit, the slower you need to run your router. The really big bits are suppose to run around 10,000 rpm, where the small bits can run as fast as 23,000 rpm. Your router manual should have a templete for the speeds, if not the company who's bits you are purchasing them form will.
