I am working on a str-v502 amp. When I disassembled the unit I found that 2 of the regulators (power supplies 5& 12 volt)had cold solder joints. Meaning of the three legs the component attaches to the main pcba assy. only two were secure. The solder flow method used during production could have been compramized in some fashion. There are also two small moduler hybrid audio output IC's that can also become thermal internally as there is no heat sink to disapate the heat they will generate, at high volumes, over a period of time. This, in my opinion is an engineering flaw. Another problem might be some of the 100uf@50volt lytic coupling caps or filter caps are faulty. They will appear bloated on top and not look the same as the others in the circuit.
I have also found broken traces witch would definitly produce poping noises. None of the possible problems are fixable without completely disassembling the unit. good luck! George,Electronic Tech
