This is not uncommon. I have made many calls that have the same problem. Sometimes, it's due to the grain direction of the box. Say for instance, the grain runs diagonally from bottom to top towards the right, then you would get better sound from the right side of the box. I have also found, that since I'm right handed, I do not strike the left side the same as I do the right side, and sometimes if I run the call upside down (paddle handle facing away) I get good sound from both sides. Another thing, try some rain chalk.
