If it's cedar and doesn't smell it must be really old. I misread your first post about the yellow pine-like grain. I scavenge for wood too. Found a couple of nice persimmon pieces about 2 1/2' long that had been cut for a couple of years by the highway dept. They forgot to haul them off. I thought the wood was wormy but it was really buggy. Toughest bugs I ever saw. Put all kinds of tunnels in that hard old wood. Might get enough wood for 8 sides and 4 bases. The rest is just too eaten up. It's hard to find persimmon anymore. Also found a stack of black locust. Highway dept. again. I'm drying it in an old truck cab but it's splitting pretty bad. I think the inside of the truck got too hot in July and August. Hunting for call wood gives me an excuse to get out and about.
