I'm still cleaning mud off the camping gear and gun cases. Foot is better but eyes almost swollen shut this AM. My Dad did some dumpster diving and came up with quite a bit of hard maple flooring. The fitness center down the street got some water on their year old gym floor so they took it up and tossed it. Most was in hunks too big to handle but there were some reasonably sized pieces. They are 2 1/4" wide and 3/4" thick with a 1/4" tongue and groove. The bottoms have a 3/8" fluted groove and two 3/16" fluted grooves about 3/16" deep. I'm going to try resawing them on the bandsaw but I haven't had much luck with that. If it works I should be able to get 3 sets of soundboards the length of the board from each one or maybe two soundboards and lid material. If you need some I'll be happy to trade you some for that piece of redbud. My woodworking stuff is at my daughters and I'm not there so will concentrate on wing bone and cane yelpers for a week or so. Also picked up some slate on the way home from deer camp so might try a couple more slate calls. I knew I should have got that poplar out but they were way too heavy to carry and I couldn't get a vehicle to them without tearing down a bunch of corn so I just hoped for the best. The combine operator said he ran over a bunch of the elm and mashed it down in the mud so that is gone too. Oh well, I still have 22 standing dead elm trees that I counted this spring. The Dutch Elm disease came around again last year and this year after about 20 years with no dead elms in the area.
I don't want this to be too long but I run up and down the Western KY Parkway a lot and there is a bunch of good wood going to waste there. The state hired some contractors to clear the right-of-way again and this time they piled up bunches of the trees they removed on the steep banks in the fill areas of the roadway. There has to be tons of dogwood and redbud in those piles as well as sweet gum and poplar. I doubt the state police would be too crazy about me stopping and whacking some off but I think I will give it a try anyway. I always heard it's catching before hanging. Let me know if you need some of this maple flooring.
