Subject: 2002 M3 blows 2nd engine

Is anyone aware of continuing problems with the M3 engines?

BMW replaced the first engine in my 2002 M3 at 11k miles. I was driving to the TN/GA game in Athens, GA last Friday when the replacement engine let go at 32k miles (only 21k miles on replacement engine).

Today I received a letter from BMW addressed to me listing my VIN number advising "the connecting rod bearings installed in your vehicle were not manufactured to BMW quality standards. As a result, the connecting rods bearings are susceptible to overheating and subsequent
premature failure if the vehicle is operated at higher engine speeds over an extended timeframe."

These are the only two engines I have ever had a problem with in my 40 years of driving and I have never driven the car at "higher engine speeds over an extended time". My car has the SMG transmission and supposedly is impossible to over rev.

Obviously the Sept 2004 bulletin was too late in reaching me..... my M3 engine blew two days before I received this notice.

I would like to hear from anyone else that is having continuing engine problems with their M3.
