• Ladies, I need your help. I have been issued a challenge and made reaching it my personal goal. Now it isn't nearly as worthy as some of the goals I've seen posted here but it's mine (no comments from the cheap seats *G*). I need to learn to say 'beer, please' in as many languages as possible. Would all you international LOL's help me by giving me first the words in the way you yourself would request a beer, then the exact translation, and the phonetic version so I can pronounce it. I do have a few already but I am not sure the grammer/syntax are correct. Thank you in advance for all help in this most inspiring (if not particularly worthy still, it sure inspired me last night *G*) mission.   Hi, ladies! I'm a newbie to the books and to LOL. In the past two months since I first started reading Outlander I have started drinking Scotch, read every book in the library about Scotland, thought about getting into Revolutionary War reenactment (I live outside of Boston) and am seriously considering learning Gaelic. I'm a weaver, so I've also researched tartan extensively. I plan to weave a shawl of Fraser tartan (and maybe one in MacKenzie and another in Murray...). There is a Fraser of Lovat tartan, of course, but does anyone know if a Lallybroch sett has been designed? Has anyone else done any tartan weaving, 18th-century reproduction weaving, or sewn an 18th century costume?

  • Hi, Stargrove. Not sure about a Lallybroch tartan. A few years ago I was messing around with a tartan thing online, thinking of a Ladies of Lallybroch tartan, but never settled on anything. It was fun playing around. If I were seriously going to make a LOL tartan it would have blues and lilacs (lavender *G*) in it, a bit of red, a hint of green.   • Hi Stargove. I don't know much about weaving but I do cross stich and fine embroidery, I recently saw (didn't have my wallet but I am going back) a book on how to cross stitch tartans (it showed how to figure the pattern to create your own, not just copy a pre-made pattern). There were a number of similar books, I will look to see if a weaving one and, if it isn't too much, will buy it or else get the publishing information for you. It was in a pioneer musuem and, I believe, privately printed so not mass production. I'll look.   In lieu of Secret Santa at work this year, our team (there are about 20 of us) is going to have a contest. Our team lead's son is in Afghanistan and their base has a store where everything is donated and the soldiers can come in and get what they want or need for free. We're going to collect what we can and pack it up to send overseas. This includes previously viewed movies, books, card games, necessities, and things that they just might like. I think we're staying away from food type items, not sure. What do you think these guys and gals would like most? I've already got a stack of movies, some avon lotions (unscented so men can use them too), dental floss, razors, card games and such ready to go. What would they want most that would come in handy? All ideas are welcome! It should be inexpensive and shippable. Each item we bring gets us a ticket for a gift basket drawing (which, if I win, will be promptly donated back to the soldiers).

  • I'm a Blue Star Mom & we mail boxes to 300 soldiers 3xa year. We get lots of donations & a company even pays all the postage! We do girl boxes with tampons, lady razors, shampoo/conditoners, wipes, paper, stationary sets, post it notes, combs, brushes, chap stick, hand cream, body lotion, toothbrushes/toothpaste, soap, liquid soap, gel hand cleaner, hmmm trying to think what else. We always put in powdered drink mixes, popcorn, &a movie or a paperback. Guy boxes get socks, underware, toiletries, & pretty much what the girl boxes get but without the girlie stuff. Always put the liquid/gel stuff in baggies so it doesn't leak out. The funniest email we got back from our soldiers was when a guy accidently got a "girl box".   How many gifts do you get your child for Christmas and their birthdays? Our child's birthday is very close to Christmas and we tend to go overboard since they are so close together. Do you go by a price range and each year the amount of gifts are different or do you buy a certain number of gifts for birthdays and Christmas? With another baby on the way, I want to plan in advance for another person at Christmas time and another December birthday.

  • I don't have a specific number in mind, but like to (obviously) have things look relatively equal between DD and DS. They are 4 and almost 2 right now. I tend to think of gifting in terms of what will they learn from each toy and group things into categories like "creative" which could be any type of arts/crafts stuff or supplies for a hobby like dancing; books; "problem-solving" like puzzles etc. along with clothes and things that they may need as they outgrow things. This is the first year where I've done a couple of "joint" gifts like a larger toy box, and videos and CDs that they will both enjoy.   • This is not original but I think it's a good rule-of-thumb. You do 3 things, 1 clothing, 1 toy & 1 'necessity'. My kids are late Nov and Jan, I have always treated their b-day as completely separate from Christmas although as they get older I think ok to blend for high cost items. As our kids get older, we give fewer gifts, but try to ge the bigger ticket items (ipods, digital cameras, etc) that we would not normally get them.   • wow...I was so going oveboard the last few years between birthday and Christmas. I always feel bad that she gets the shaft a bit at her birthday so we were getting like 5-8 presents for each thing. Guess I should scale back while she's young and not thinking she's intitled to everything. We decided to do a big gift from us with a few little things for both bday and xmas and a abig gift and stockings from santa. I want to make sure she realizes Christmas isn't about the presents and teach her the true meaning so maybe if we do less at Christmas that wouldhelp and show her that even though everyone is busy at this time of year, her birthday is still important.       • Speaking as one born a week before Christmas, as she gets older, DO try to keep them seperate. I still remember being handed my birthday gift from various local relatives a week later at the Family Christmas gatherings. I was appeciative they thought of me, but ( & I speak for all the holiday Bday people) it really stunk getting all presents in 1 week of the year, let alone on the same day, particularly when the Bday presents were (on several occasions) a Christmas sweater.   • We're pretty much in line w/ the rule of 3 or 4 plus stocking stuffers, but because DTSons b/ds are three days after Christmas I save one of the really wanted gifts to help the b/d be memorable for them. It's a challenge to keep the b/d from being lost in the shuffle of party week between all the partying starting before Christmas Day and going into New Year's.   • A friend used to giver her sons 3 presents at Christmas= one fun, one practical, and one sentimental. She thought it was like Jesus receiving the gold, frankensense and myrrh from the Wise Men. I have so many neice & nephew birthdays - always birthday wrap, cards, etc. - never Christmas. I have a birthday budget of $10-12 per kid for that - same as those bdays during the rest of the year. For us, at Christmas, I try to get each person one 'wow' gift & depending on $$ amount, a couple smaller items. Stockings always have tiny fun stuff, but also the socks & undies.   • Birthdays were 1-2 gifts, depending on what they wanted/cost. When they were little, it was spending the same amount, and the same number of gifts. They each got a lot - but it was a lot (20-25) of little things for the most part - matchbox cars, legos, Barbie clothes. A complete outfit - undies, top, pants, sox since they were tired of the new stuff from new school clothes. They didn't get a lot of stuff throughout the year - that's what their allowance was for. Usually one BIG item (toy stove/ boom box/ camera). Now they are all grown, with kids. Hard part is the difference between the family of 6 and the single DS. Single DS tends to get more since it is only him, and he doesn't have in laws. Couples get a "food" gift (Harry & David or Wolfermans). Grandkids get money. Doctor visit this morning and then made Cathy's version of Cioppinno (turned out GREAT!) and garlic bread for dinner with good friend-then went with her to a 'Tellabration 2009' at a local library. (Ed was happy to stay home and watch tv alone. *G*) This is an annual worldwide celebration of storytelling for adults. Loved it and looking forward to attending a few of the monthly gatherings in the near future. What a neat thing! The last speaker made me cry . . . began talking of the civil war, the world wars, etc., and continued talking of her career-Marine father who was in charge of the state of Alabama family survivors detail during Vietnam . . . and how little has changed since.   As I type this, I'm looking at my cats (all 4 of them) draped all over the dining room table (no food on it, of course) and a dog who is ensconsed in the leather sofa. Now, I always sanitize the table (regardless of previous cat occupancy or not) when I serve food, and the leather sofa was purchased specifically because leather holds up well to dogs' muddy paws and toenails - wipe it with a wet cloth and it's good as new. To be honest, trying to keep everybody off the furniture, table, or counters is more work than I'm willing to do!
  
  Two cats and one dog (100 pounds!) share our queen-sized bed. Between my bed-hog tendencies and Rudy's love of stretching out in the middle, it's a wonder DH doesn't just fall out of bed.
  
  So....do you let your pets on the furniture? Do they sleep with you? (I'm asking because my mom just left, and she was horrified that the cats were on the table. I asked her if she's ever eaten here with a cat on the table - she had to admit no - but said, "It's just gross." I told her not to look anymore. :-D)

  • The cats are allowed on chairs and sofa, and on the kids' beds (because the kids want it). They're not allowed into our bedroom though, and they're not allowed on the table. I stayed with friends recently and, honestly, having the cat sitting on the table (on the tablecloth!) drinking milk out of his bowl while we were having breakfast really grossed me out.   • It's a mixed bag here, our cat can go on the beds and couch and sits on the hatch between the kitchen and dining room, but woe-betide her if she ever gets on a table or counter top. Not sure how I trained it out of her, none of our cats have ever been allowed to, and none of them ever have. The dogs can only get up if invited - except for the little terrier who is treated like a cat and goes where she wants (couch and end of bed, not tables or counters).   • No cats ever here (DH is very allergic), but when we had our dog, no she wasn't allowed on furniture or in bed w/us. She shed terribly, & I didn't want the hair on my bed or cloth cushions. Also, I didn't want the bed/furniture to smell like "dog." Plus, I always thought having the bed being off limits would make it easier if she got fleas.   • We have 2 cats in the house and 1 dog in the house. Our other dogs are outside dogs (except in bad weather and at night when they sleep in their kennels). Anyway, our cats do not get on the counters or table when we are there, but I know my white cat does when we aren't because I find her hair. The dogs and the cats are allowed on the couch and we have a special attachment to our vaccuum to clean the pet hair. No dogs or cats in the bed, although my tuxedo cat does sneak up there from time to time, but she stays on the very corner by my feet until I realize she's there and push her off. We have had to block off access to the upstairs when we leave because we can't keep her out of the rooms all of a sudden and the couches now have to have things on them so she can't climb up when we leave.   • I love my animals, but like children, I feel they need boundaries! My cat sleeps in the laundry (he has a very comfy bed, litter box and food in there) and the dog stays outdoors, unless there's a thunderstorm. If the dog is allowed inside (like today, because it's SO hot), he has been trained not to jump on the sofa. If there's a storm, he's allowed to sleep by the side of my bed, on the floor. I have never allowed him to get on the bed, as that teaches them that they are your equal in the pack order - I think it's harder to train them when they don't see themselves at the bottom of the pack. The cat got squirted with water whenever he jumped on the kitchen bench or dining table when he was a kitten, so he knows better now.     • When my first son was 1.5, I went back to finish up the last 3 classes of my MBA, and I also worked fulltime. I did only take one class a semester. You only have up to 5 classes and the majority of the work is AT WORK. ( I studied at working during lunch). That was all 14 years ago, and I never for once have regretted doing this. Yes, there is Mommy guilt, but it goes away. And I always thought that what I was doing was like "insurance" for my kids if something ever happened to their father....and I had to be the support.     • When opportunity knocks take it! This is perfect for you. Something similar happened to my DH. He was going for his MBA and he worked for a Paper Mill in No.MN as their Training Director. In 2003 there was a mass layoff then his boss was killed in a tragic plane crash. DH was snowed under with work. His college counselor suggested he write a paper on the new re-organization at the Mill. (Simple explanation) well he did not have to go to anymore classes(school wasin Duluth over 80 miles) and in the end he got his MBA.     • Sounds like a great opportunity...BUT.... Be sure DH is on board, and willing to pick up the slack. REALLY talk this through, since it will take family time, and without a strong support system, it will be harder. Sounds like it won't take a lot out of what you are already doing, and a great thing - just be sure you & DH know what to expect will be different. Be sure that your kids have back up support - if Mom usually does XYZ, who does it now? Takes planning, but CAN be done. I went back to change careers when youngest was in HS, DH went back after retirement, new degree in new area, and new career. Study time will take family time. Plan for it. I'm always an advocate for a mother - whether working outside the home or not - setting a goal for herself and reaching it. Your kids will learn so much. Mommy guilt is a terrible thing - and I definitely have it too - but sometimes, we have to remember that we are people too, and we can't be the most effective parent if we are not fulfilled ourselves.   • Go to the control panel to sound devices and choose the "Sound Tab" in here you will see at the bottom a list of actions with or without sounds applied to them.   A shopping trip to Grove City and Erie, PA is planned for Nov 26-27 with myself, DD amd DF. Every room is booked for miles around and our hotel is a ˝ hour drive from Grove City. This is our first Black Friday shopping experience. Dearest Lallpals, if you have shopped in this area on Black Friday, would you please tell me how your experiences were with: a) what places to avoid, b)where the worst lineups are, c) is there accessible parking, d)where to eat, e) anything else you can tell me?   • You have to know what you're looking for specifically and know what it should cost. Sometimes you can get a shorter line if you are paying cash. I went on a bus shopping trip from Canada 2 years ago and, to be honest, I didn't find any particular bargains but I think that was because I wasn't looking for particular things. Had fun though, met some guys who fish near where I live staying at the same hotel - small world. We really don't care for her given name and for safety reasons (can't go into detail) she does not need to be known by her given name in public, such as at church and at the kid's school. My SIL's mom is a foster parent and she has always had 'variations' on their names while they are with her...example--Caleb is called Cale, Angel is called Angie...for when they are in public. • Almost a year ago.. or it might have been a year ago.. I posted a message about feeling that I waited to late in life to have goals, and that I would like to take the GED test. Anyway.. I'm not sure if anyone remembers or not. I started GED classes last January and I take my test on Saturday.
