• Cleaning advice needed -- Helka, 08:01:58 11/13/12 Tue
  I'm searching for a house with my DH. I'm interested in one nice & quite new house but the catch is that I'm allergic to dogs and there has been two big dogs in the house all the time. So do you have any experience or advice about how to clean the house that I could start living there w.o. allergy meds. Of course I'm thinking of repainting walls and new wallpapers & stuff like that.

  • Yeah, get it professionally done. My neighbour just bought the house behind us to live in while they renovated their main house next door. The house behind us had two big dogs (not even that shedding) and we were laughing because the day before the owners left we could hear the vacuum going pretty much 10 hours straight. DH is SEVERELY allergic to rodents (including hampsters & guinea pigs) and cannot go to his sister's house w/ all new carpet & furniture b/c they never got the ducts cleaned after having two GP's.     • The house was quite nice, and DH liked it as well. It did smell strongly of wet dogs, which was quite off putting for both of us. Eventually I got sore feeling to my throat and was relieved to be out of there. The house has many positive facts, especially as the lot is 2,5 hectars (= almost 30000 square yards).   • My DD's have this problem--water gets trapped behind ear wax. One found this product to be very helpful, Acu-Life Ear Wax Removal System (available on Amazon and in some drugstores).   • Put 1/2 tsp hyrdogen peroxide in ear with head tilted (yes I have done this) it bubbles and tickles - wait for your ear to do a soft pop - then tilt head to let out - then put salt in a sock and tie it and lie down for awhile with your ear resting on the sock. even take a nap.   • If it is water, alcohol or white vinegar is best, although be careful with the alcohol, when it evaporates quickly, it can give you a feeling of vertigo. if the problem is ear wax related, soften with hydrogen peroxide, as some have suggested, then get a bulb syringe and gently rinse with warm water. If you happen to have a water-pic, they work very well. Soften the wax with hydrogen peroxide, then use warm soapy water in the water pic (hold your head over the sink or a large towel) and use the lowest setting to pulse water into your ear. • OK, so I'm a Midwest (USA) girl and we have a "nasally" accent. My DD has wandered off to NYC and acquired (wait for it) a Southern California accent because one of her best friends is from Cali. So - we pronounce the word "not" as "naht" - except that Katie has started saying it like "naught." So - for today's useless poll - how do YOU say it?   • I have what you would call a typical southern English accent. I would say 'not' exactly as 'knot'. We have a lot of differences here in the UK with the letter 'a'. So southerners say it almost with a letter 'r', eg 'Barth' for 'bath' and 'glarss' for 'glass'. People from further north would say 'baath' and 'glaass'. I would like to note for the record, though, that when I started out in broadcasting in college (yup - didn't end up there), that I was the ONLY student in a class of 30 in southern Ohio who did NOT have to work on her accent. My prof. said Michiganians use standard English - and most national newscasters sound like us. All my Buckeye friends were working on their "southern" accent. This has moved me to recently discover several "Rita" films from the Hair Horns Era: "Cover Girl," "Tonight And Every Night," and "Down To Earth." I'm going to seek out all her other films from her early career that I can. I was only familiar with the darker, slightly later stuff, "Gilda," "Lady From Shanghai," and "Pal Joey." Anyway....   Asking mothers of a second child, because I barely remember this time myself. My little granddaughter is 17 months and doesn't talk except to say mama once in awhile. Her brother who is 4 is a real motor mouth. She is very smart, knows to sit down and what her shoes are and where they go, will pick up her bottle when asked etc. But when she is excited she.... pants like a puppy (so does he sometimes). I have never seen this. Just wondering was your second baby slow to start talking? Guess I just need the reassurance. Yes she sees a doctor every month or so for checkups. I have her alone 3 days a week and work on sounds not excessively but one would think she would have NO down by now.

  • Some children are precocious when it comes to talking and some are more reserved. My first child had a 60+ word vocabulary at 18 months, but in reality, developmentally on track is 4-6 words at 18 months. If she is able to identify things by pointing, then she knows the words, she just hasn't figured out how to say them. As the mother of many kids, (foster, adoptive and biological), I can tell you, they are all very different. My 7 year old hardly said anything until she was 3 (except for NO!). My 3 year old didn't say much until she was about 27 months old, then she took off and talks non stop now. My 2 year old had a traumatic brain injury at 29 days old (before she came to live with us), and she is struggling with language development. She babbles constantly, but she can only say about 10 words. She knows what she wants to say, she just can't make her tongue say it, so she is receiving speech therapy services. He said a few words but that was it. Dr checked his ears, and asked him a few questions and told me to enjoy it while it lasted. She jabbers in her nonsense language all the time, so we figure pretty soon she'll start spewing full sentences. She also can identify things and help put away her toys.   • It is typical for second and later children not to talk as early as older children, as the family is adept at translating gestures, etc., into meaning, and it is, at first, quicker and easier than encouraging the spoken word. Sometimes children of any birth order do not talk until they speak full - but short - sentences. There is another possibility, a negative one, that I feel you should know: it could be related to a hearing difficulty. Does she have frequent earaches? Does she respond normally to sounds and to the spoken word? Does she seem to read lips? If you suspect a hearing difficulty, you may want to encourage the parents to get her tested.   • I remember that my second child, a boy and 5 years younger than his older sister, was saying so little by age 2 that the dr mentioned if he wasn't stringing 3-4 word phrases together by 2 1/2 that he should have some testing done. Within a few months of that dr visit he started to have more to say, and hasn't stopped talking since. She is now at NYU on a full academic scholarship and quite (perhaps TOO) articulate, so probably no need to worry.   As I'm steadily working on some little crafty Christmas ornament gifts for my family/co-workers/friends, I was pondering making bread for DH's family members. Money is tight, as usual, so I'm thinking outside the box, simple, and economical. I can easily bake old fashion, mix it up, knead it, let it rise, etc bread. But I was trying to figure out how is the best way to give these kind of presents:
  - Baked, then frozen, then give it out semi-thawed?
  OR
  - Frozen dough, ready to bake? (with instructions on how to bake it.)
  AND ~ Full sized loaves or mini loaves???
  
  How would YOU like to receive a gift like this?
  (Btw, DH is making jelly, which could go along nicely with the bread.)

  • Ooooh, Donna, I would love to receive that kind of present! For me, who is not a great cook, it would be easiest to get the loaf baked then frozen. That way I could set it out the night before & wake to delicious bread (w/jam!) for breakfast. Second easiest would be frozen loaf to cook...but things like that get lost in my freezer, how long would the dough be good if frozen. What a thoughtful gift; I hope they appreciate it! This does not make them 'blind' as we know it - just extreme visual deficits in some areas.   I know Michelle but haven't seen her for a few years. There is no reason I should dream about her. So, in my dream I've stopped at a stoplight, and she has to coming in the opposite direction. We see each other and start getting out of our cars. Although she is happy to see me, she is more interested in the cat that had been hit on the street. I didn't realize this until she went and picked it up, looking at me really sad like "look at him". She puts it back on the street and it looks almost dead. She gives it a mercy killing by stabbing it with her umbrella. I remember thinking that was such a brave thing to do...then I wake up. hahahaha. Michelle, hope you read this.

  Went to lunch with my neighbors today who were quite astonished that I not only paid for my own wedding, that I said if I had girls I would not pay for their entire wedding.
  
  I said I would give them a set amount of dollars that they could do whatever they want with, elope and put towards a house, spend it all on vacation, a wedding, whatever.. but no I wasn't footing the whole bill for a wedding.
  
  Finally at the end, when I they were still going on about it I said... maybe this is because I grew up in a blue collar neighborhood! *g*
  
  I just thought I would ask what you all think of this girls parents paying for the whole gala! Even though I have boys, I would not give either sex a full ride on a wedding, no matter how much money I had.... okay if I was in the 1% maybe since I would be saving so much in taxes. *g*

  • I'm the only daughter and the youngest of 4 - My parents paid for our wedding, but it was a small, family thing held in a small country church, then the reception was at my parents home. Nothing over the top - which my mother could have easily turned it into a circus if I had let her. But I wanted it very simple & sweet - with family helping in every area...DSIL did the flowers, my aunts helped with the food, friends helped, too. I tried to make it easy on everyone - financially, as well as other ways. The most expensive thing was the photographer, and IMO, that is worth the $$$. If I had girls, I'd try to help in anyway I could - sewing dresses, making things etc, but there is no way I could pay for the whole thing. I guess its a good thing I have 2 boys!     • As the 4th of 5 daughters, I was happy to have the same assistance as my two older (already married) sisters. Due to a 16 year age difference between the oldest and youngest daughter, the oldest was married when the youngest was 4 and I was 8. The way it was worked out was that our parents would pay for half of the wedding and the bridal couple would pay the other half. Included in that was the cost of the wedding, the reception, flowers, food, music, liquor, bridal gown, trousseau, etc. Photographer was the responsibility of the bridal couple as were gifts for attendants, honeymoon, etc. This worked out well. I have no way of knowing if the dollar amounts were in any way equal, but due to the number of years between the weddings I'm sure they weren't. The main differences were if the groom's families were able to assist. For us, that was not the case. But we're not talking a big Northern wedding with sit-down dinner. Mine was in our church with cake and snack reception in the Fellowship Hall; my dress was not much more than $100.     • Linda, I think a lot depends on the age of the bridal couple. I was 19 when we married and most of my friends were the same age or a year or two older. Most of them had parents who paid for the entire wedding. I've been to many weddings in recent years where the bride's parents paid it all but also some where the bridal couple paid for some/most of it.   • I have a thing about thinking that people should pay their own way - whether its a wedding, car, education, etc. When my ds got married 13 years ago, they had a big church wedding (his dw is Catholic) and then 2 large receptions over 2 days. He married a girl from Hong Kong where the tradition is that the groom's parents foot the bill. Like that would ever happen! Fortunately for him, her parents are Very wealthy and it was their idea to have a huge wedding weekend with a second night reception in China town. Ds wanted a small family affair. Her parents even insisted on renting a restaurant for the rehearsal dinner to accommodate all of their out of town guests. However, they were all done without all the over the top shenanigans - we do have a large close family, so they weren't small but my parents raised us all to be cost-conscious and we appreciated it! In my case, parents paid for food, cake, flowers, and invitations. We paid for our own photographer and honeymoon. My dress and the girls dresses were made by my mom's friend and my grandmother paid for them. This is just one more reason why I hate reality TV - I guess in the 80s with Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, it was so over the top that we knew we'd never have those yachts and mansions!! In the early 70's, my sister and I had simple weddings at our home church with a cake and punch reception in the parish hall.   My boyfriend and I have been dating for two years now. We have both had to deal with the fact that we both had a friend of the opposite sex whom we had platonic dates, frequently, before we met each other. It is my personal belief that it isn't healthy for a relationship to have a close relationship with someone of the other sex other than your partner, unless you can do it as a group. But the hot German girl he use to hang with never cared to get to know me. I have never met her in 2 years. But she has harassed him to continue to hang out with her..."Why can't things just be the same way they use to be?" Ummm, because I exist, now?
  
  Now, the guy I use to have friend dates with is much less hot than the German girl (who sent my BF professional boudoir pics she had taken and asked if he wanted to see the naked ones, too). My friend is a real nerd, who I believe has Aspbergers, though I've never asked him. He's an interesting guy who was interested in more than friendship with me, but I told him I just wanted to be friends a long time ago. So we were. He would take me to plays and concerts and buy me small gifts when he traveled. But my BF has met this guy and realizes why I never made a love connection with him. Still, he feels the same way with him that I do about the German girl...only as a group (except he doesn't really seem to want to hang with him as a group, either, really).
  
  Problem is that my guy friend doesn't invite my BF to do things with him, but he does invite me, still. This guy has other girls he platonically takes to plays, too...some of them married and in relationships. I think he's just a very lonely geek. So, it's pretty innocent, but I've blown him off with excuses why I can't go with him for so long. I don't know what else to tell him. That the BF and I don't think it's healthy to hang out with the opposite sex friends alone? Does that sound goofy? Also, because I suspect my friend has Aspbergers, he does not take to hints and subtlety very well. How should I address this without hurting him? Advice?

  • I would tell him that you don't want or like BF to hang out with girls that are just friend because it makes you feel jealous and unhappy. And because you feel like that, and your BF does what you ask, you feel it's only fair to extend him the same courtesy. That you'll all go in a group, but that' just the way your relationship works.   • I dunno, Reilly...I agree that overall it's not a good idea but the situation you describe sounds like one that could fall into the exception category if you wanted it to. Plus, if you suspect he may have Aspbergers then the same rules don't necessarily apply. As long as he understands the boundaries of your friendship and is respectful and behaving appropriately, as opposed to hot german girl who totally isn't, then I don't know that there can be much harm in it if you like his friendship and he is interesting to be around. You mention the words "close personal relationship" but going to movies and shows doesn't have to be a close personal relationship. I suppose the difference is what you talk about.   • Its not easy, I was good friends a guy once,we would go watch the footie and go to concerts and the cinema, he did hope at first that it would be a romance but I didn't feel the same way. I told him and he still wanted to be friends. At one concert we met a woman he knew from school and she asked my sister if we were an item, when she was told no she gave him her number. They went out and have been a couple ever since which is lovely for Rob as that's what he was looking for, but i'm not allowed in his life anymore. He met me to pick up a book he'd left with me and we popped to the pub for a drink. He was bombarded with texts from her telling him to come home. He was a bit embarrassed but we both realised that he couldn't be my friend any more. I miss him, I did get emails checking how I was but didn't reply to the last one. I think its sad that he can't have a female friend but then I'm not sure I wouldn't feel the same in her position. Shame but I guess you just have to be honest.   Have had the same company for 25 years, only 2 small claims in that entire time. We had hail damage to our car a month ago. Called, and they've been giving us a major run around. I think what happened is the adjuster came out and I saw online the estimate was almost $3,000. About half the value of our car now. It's a 10 year old Lexus SUV and we've bought in used 2 years ago, in very good condition. It's probably worth $7K now. Anyway, I think the insurance company jsut doesn't want to pay, we've had words and now they are saying it's not hail. That they are experts, and they and the collission company say so. There is at least 100 dings all over the back and side of my car. DH and adjuster got into it over the phone and we're fumming. So what do we do? They are not considering it an act of god, and was insinuating we are liars. OK..do we have any recourse other thant to just change insurance companies. I am just livid.

  • Can you get written proof of the weather EXACTLY over where your car was parked during the storm? Short of a photo of the hail damage happening, I can't think of anything else. There are legal call-in radio shows where you present your problem. How about Car Talk? How about writing to the business section of the most widely read newspaper in your area, if they have a columnist who answers mail like this. I'm sure others here will weigh in.       • BTW, depending on what insurance company you're with, that agent of yours is either a company employee or an independent. If they're independent they should be your point of contact about the problems you're having, because if not, then they're not doing their job. If the agent is what is termed a captive agent (meaning an employee of the insurance company directly), then it's a bit more difficult to deal with the situation, and maybe mentioning the insurance commissioner might be advisable, even going to the state insurance board website and investigating whether there are other complaints related to the company, etc. Hope I've been of a bit of help.   • As a former insurance agent (although in Canada, not the US), 'vandalism' and 'hail' damages are all insured perils under your comprehensive coverage - however, you have to have comp coverage and not specified perils which is more limiting. Either way, they should be covering the repairs, subject to your comp deductible. Oh, and having only 2, now 3, claims in over 25 years, doesn't appear to be a valid reason for cancelling your policy, although it depends on the severity of the claims and the types of losses, to be honest.       • If it's just cosmetic more than anything, I'm not sure I'd go further with this, even though I know that if this was my car, I'd be fuming. If the company continues to argue about not paying for the claim, that's one thing. The 'what type of damage' it is, I'm not so sure that is even relevant. That being said, if you plan on giving this to your kids to drive, they may or may not have an accident with it - but if the damage is really not severe (I mean, paint chipping that might get worse as the years go on), I'd re-evaluate getting it fixed now, although it sounds as if the dollar figure of damage is substantial.   It's that time of the year again... my eldest child's birthday!! My well rounded girl is friends with girls and boys and wants to invite both to her party. It's bloody hard finding a theme boys and girls will both like, especially at 6-8 years old. I have decided to go with a movie theme birthday party. I can bake the cake, the party favors are super cheap and snacks will be popcorn (with our popper) and a local pizza shop sells $5 large pizzas. So we are set... except for a movie!

  One of mine is First Niagara Bank. They are fee happy. I had thousands in their bank and they still charged me left and right. Yes I followed their rules and yes I got the fees refunded. You know me.
  Next is Time Warner. Those bastards let my house bound elderly mother sit with no cable for 6 days because they couldn't flip a switch and they were only in that town on a certain day. Bull hockey. Town is 15,000 people. I tried to complain but could not find out how and I tried HARD. Couldn't take business elsewhere because it was only service at the assisted living.

  • Sears. I was shoppping for a winter coat. Found one I like, a bit expensive but decided it was worth it. When I took the coat to the cash the lady told me I could put it on hold (for $1), that the next day the jacket would be on sale at 50%. I said I couldn't get back there the next day, was there any way I could get the sale today. No. The drive to Sears is almost an hour and I wasn't willing to risk it, I ended up not getting the jacket. The next day, as luck would have it, I had to go back to that town anyway so I went into Sears, found my jacket, brought it to cash and - guess what? My jacket was not one of the ones on sale. I was furious. I demanded a manger come and (very loudly so everyone in the store heard) told them what I thought of all this and my 'special trip' back for no other reason. She wasn't even interested. I ended up by cutting up my charge card in very public view. I will never shop there again, that was 5 + years ago and I haven't been back.   • Walmart! When my sister was 17 she worked there part time and was still in high school. When our mom died they didn't want to give her ANY time off!!! I ended up going into big sister mode and gave the manager a piece of my mind AND got her the time off. She didn't work there much longer after that. I also hate insurance companies. You pay and pay and then when you actually NEED them they don't take care of you, or the deductible eats up most of the cost of the repair and then your rates go up anyway.   • Well DH is not a dictator and I think he has pulled the forbid clause only twice. Once was don't drive on this road. He could of said don't do it or I don't want you to but he wants me to be safe and the road is curvy and by a deep canal and has no guardrail in places and slippery in winter.   We're re planning a Florida trip this Christmas. We visited 9 or 10 years ago, but of course, the kids are much older now (17 and 15) This will likely be our last big family trip before DD is off to school. I know you can buy Universal tickets at Costco in US. Would you know how much you save? WE are wondering if it is worthwhile heading there on our way for tickets. Any other money saving tips? Places to visit other that the big theme parks? Last time we went to Kennedy Space Centre, the Everglades and the Manatee rescue. We love nature/history/geographical places. We will be splitting up our trip, so we are not doing theme parks EVERY day. Last time we had sensory overload, so this time we are planning other activies every 3rd day or so.         • Heather - just a short distance down US A1A from St. Augustine you will find Marineland. It is a teaching facility but also has a neat shop and cafe as well as a boardwalk on the beach.   • What about Bok Towers to hear the Carillion Bells? We had it on our list of things to do but ran out of time. There is ice skating in the streets at night with a bit of faux snow, and an old fashioned drug store with sodas and burgers. The whole little town is like being whisked back in time to a more charming era. We love the Ikea store in Orlando too. But if you have one near you, that won't be a thrill. A boy I went out with a few times a million years ago got HUGE points when he met my dad by removing hat the minute he opened door and shaking his hand while looking him in the eye.   • sorry disagree....if its a nice dinner then of course not but on occassion I just don't fight that battle with my adult son and his baseball cap ... he has a very bad receding hairline and is very emabarrassed by it and how bad is hair looks...his cap is permanently attached when he is not at his office.     • It's obsessive wearing of baseball caps that contributes to receding hair. Back when we were at uni my hair dresser told me a lot of the girls were losing hair at the front because wearing baseball hats all the time starved the hair or something.   • A lot don't and I think it's part of the whole loss of respect for other people thing. It goes along with (IMO) wearing jeans or shorts to church, chewing gum in public, eating on the subway...if I get started I won't stop. One of my biggest on this list is people who listen to music and/or talk on the phone while they are dealing with you, it doesn't matter if they have earphones - not long ago I was leaving a parking lot and I told the clerk I wasn't paying until she got off the phone, she told her friend 'just a minute' and I said 'no, hang up'.
