Dear Si Frumkin,
I appreciate your sentiments regarding slavery in Sudan. It is striking though that the LA Times seems not to have reported the genocide going on in Sudan since 1956. Be that as it may, I regret that you seem to have fallen into the trap of classifying --or allowing others to classify-- the Jews as "white" without qualification. Skin color is a red herring issue often used against Israel by our enemies. Bear in mind that in 1900 Jews in Europe [and to a lesser extent in America] were considered "orientals" and not quite white. As to being Oriental, this label for Jews is found in Kant and Hegel. Now as to skin color, not only Nazis but mainstream British authors [see the novel Trilby by George DuMaurier; a notorious Jewish gangster in Philadelphia was called Nig Rosen (guess why)] described Jews as swarthy, not quite white, if white at all. Now the Judeophobes and Israelophobes insinuate that Israeli Jews are the whitest of white. Actually, both positions come down to the same thing: Jews are alien to where they are living. In point of fact, Jews are more on the swarthy side than the pink-faced side [my mother's father, a native of Belarus, a Litvak, was brown; my mother was called olive-skinned or, in Yiddish, shvarts'henevdik; my father's side too is mostly dark]. But facts really don't matter to the Israelophobes. The insinuations about Jews being "white" in contrast to "non-white" Arabs began in the 1960s, when so-called "leftists" wrote that Jews were in conflict with a "non-white people," the Arabs, forgetting that Amin el-Husseini, British-appointed mufti of Jerusalem, and other Arab nationalist leaders were honored guests in Berlin during WW2 and the Holocaust. By the way, Husseini had reddish hair and blue eyes. Let's recognize that skin color labels are a red herring and a trap.
