Subject: Food Problems in Tzfat

From Rena reco@isdn.net.il

September 2003/Elul 5763

Shalom from Tsfat, Israel. We hope that our letter finds you and your family well. In just a few weeks we will be celebrating Rosh Hashana: the year will be 5764. It is an exciting time for us as we examine the old year and prepare for a new one. I have a story that I want to share with you.

About 2,000 years ago a saintly man, Binyamin HaTzadik lived in Tsfat. His tomb is actually just down the street from Rena's apartment. We have been told that even today he watches over the citizens of Tsfat as he was very involved with feeding the hungry. Binyamin was in charge of a charity fund. During a particularly difficult famine the charity funds he managed were exhausted. One day he was approached by a woman who asked for money for her family who were dying from hunger. He explained that all the money had been used up and there was nothing that he could give her. She began to wail "You have condemned a widow and her seven sons to death."

We are told that Binyamin supported the widow and her children with his own money for all the years of the famine. Once when he was very ill, on the verge of death, the heavenly angels came before G-d and said; "Master of the World, You have said that whoever saves one soul in Israel is accounted as having saved the entire world. Should Binyamin HaTzadik who saved a woman and her seven sons now die at such a young age?" Immediately the decree against him was abolished and he was granted another 22 years of life.

We are hoping to raise $3,000 which will provide food hampers for 100 needy families. If we receive more, then of course we will be able to help more. Here is how you can help.

1. You can check us out on the Internet at http://www.lamedvuvnik.org - look under True Stories, Rena Tzfat. That will tell you what we are doing here with all the money we have been blessed to receive. It is possible to send a donation of any amount. Tax receipts are provided and money is sent immediately.

2. Donors in the USA also receive tax receipts by sending a check, made out to PEF for $25 or more, with a note that the donation is for Lev U'Neshama. Send it directly to:
PEF Israel Endowment Fund, 317 Madison Avenue, #607, New York, NY 10017. They forward all donations to us at regular intervals.

3. If receipts are not needed, send checks directly to the address at the bottom of this page.

In all three cases, all money raised goes directly to provide for the families. We thank you so much for considering our request and may we take this opportunity to wish you and your family health, happiness and all that is good in the coming year. And, may we all be blessed with peace.

Sincerely,

Rena, Yaffa, and Faga
Lev U'Neshama Volunteers.
