Subject: A promising alternative

John F. Kerry has outlined a concise approach to get Iraq on the path to democracy. Now is not the time to argue about whether we were right to invade Iraq. As he said, "we cannot afford to see Iraq become a permanent source of terror that will endanger America's security for years to come." He is right that we have traded a dictator for a chaos that has left America less secure. George W. Bush's plan for Iraq has failed. Already this month, more American troops have been killed in Iraq than in the month before the handover. Immediate action to change course is necessary to create a stable Iraqi democracy that will fight terrorists within its before they can attack us inside ours.
Before the war, bipartisan congressional hearings and outside studies predicted many of the challenges we now face in Iraq, but Bush chose to ignore them and rush into war without a strategy to win the peace.
Kerry's plan emphasizes the need for help and support from the international community: providing troops, training Iraqi security forces and aiding in the rebuilding of Iraq's infrastructure. A stable, democratic Iraq would make the world a safer place.
