Subject: Swansea Airport Plans Approved

Today (Tues 4th June)Swansea City Council have approved the planning application for improvement of the airport.
A vote in favour of common sense! For once!
In my experience of collecting for the petition, 85 - 90% of local residents are in favour of expantion.

Just a couple of questions for you as we are obviously not going to agree on most issues
1) How many people from Dunvant signed the petition as opposed to Killay residents?
2) With the expansion plans for the hangers approved how much expansion is acceptable to you - concrete all of Fairwood common with planes landing/taking off every 10 minutes or would this be a bit extreme?
New access roads built through Upper killay/Three Crosses?
What is the level that you would find unacceptable?
I am interested to know.

1. I can't answer.
2. Saying that all of Fairwood Common would be concreted is a bit of an exaggeration!! The airport is the airport. Whatever the frequency of arrivals and departures - it goes with the territory. I think we all know that Fairwood has a 24 hr licence.
Who has said new access roads will be built? It may be not be feasible!

I have nothing to do with SANER, just an interested person who lives in Killay, and is on the flight path.

Niel, having collected a few sheets for the petition in favour of Swansea Airport, I can tell you that very many people from Dunvant and Three Crosses signed. We left a couple of sheets at the Gower Golf course and they were quickly filled out mainly by residents of 3XXX.
I spent about 1 1/2 hrs in the Killay precinct last Sat morning; I found that aprox 85 - 90 % of people are in favour of the airport, many of them from Dunvant and Upper Killay.
Many, many were asking to sign without even being approached. It was not unusual for some to say "I live on the flight path and it doesn't bother me!"
You may have some good arguments as to why Swansea airport should not have any further development, the case can be argued either way. I am not against you or SANE giving voice to your opinions, some of which I can sympathise with.
What we in SANER have demonstrated conclusively is that the majority of locals (The affected area), are very much in favour of continued development at the site.
What I would suggest, if you are to have any credibility, is that your arguments should be based on rational instead of overblown scare mongering. A spur road from the M4 is never going to run through Gowerton and 3XXX. Fairwood will never be covered in concrete. And a Boeing 747 is never going to land at fairwood, never mind take off spewing fuel over Three Cliffs. Some of the comment I have read in the local press and on this site do no favours for SANE, suggesting that Swansea could be a second Lokerbee, and that planes will be taking off and landing every 10 mins day and night, just make people laugh,and do your cause no good at all.
