Subject: 200' 5/16 G4 on Cactus Tree

This morning I put 200' G4 chain on Cactus Tree. It put the bow down about 2". The boat is light, because of ongoing work in the cockpit.
I wonder how this will change how the boat sails.There will be more weight added to the stern, but in the form of fuel and water. Also a stern anchor rode, not so heavy.
Anyone else put this amount of chain forward?

Similar on Murre. She had 60ft of 1/4 chain and a 25lb danforth when we bought her. A couple years ago I replaced w/100ft of 5/16th, a 35lb CQR, and a manual windlass supported from underneath by heavy oak backing that runs athwartships all the way out to the hull flange.

That put the lower nut on the bobstay tang decidedly under water.

I've moved heavier stuff aft and keep water out of the vberth tank (it leaks anyway) and have **mostly** got Murre to rights, but her heaviness in the bows is evident in chop and obviously she’s more prone now to hobby horsing.

I plan (though it's low on the list) to create a hawse pipe that feeds the chain into the entirely empty space in the middle of the vberth under the bunk. That would lower it and move it aft some (it also would interfere w/my feet when sleeping—so I’ve been slow to attack this). And I often lash the anchor between the main and fore lower shroud when going any distance. I probably should add another 100lbs or so in lead, or some such, to the aft end of the bilge.

I’m never entirely sure this ground tackle arrangement was necessary. Though we anchor a lot, I rarely put out more than 90 feet of chain, and given my current cruising ground (all mud) the original set-up worked just fine. But I like the heavier tackle. It’s more go-anywhere.

I am outfitting for the long haul, so I think I'll need the heavy ground tackle. I'm thinking of stuff I can stash back aft to balance it out.
Only a couple of big ticket items to go, then it's all test runs and provisioning.

Not in Hawaii, I bought the boat in San Pedro a year ago.
Hawaii is still my home but I'll be cruising to Mexico in October.
The tank is 18 gallons fuel. I need to update on the owners site. Think I'll wait till I'm done though. Lots of additions and upgrades.
I've spent some time in the bay area over the years, commercial fishing and shipping merchant marine.
